Tiruvarur is the only temple that has more number of Thevaram hymns 353

Great Saivite Saints Gnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar, Sundarar, Manickavasagar had sung the glory of Lord of the temple in their celebrated Thevaram and Tiruvasagam hymns.  Of the Shiva temples on the southern bank of Cauvery, this is the 87th praised in Thevaram hymns

Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Lord Thiagesar granting His Feet darshan – Pada Darshan; 10 day Panguni Uthiraim in March-April with the flag hoisting on the Hastha Star Day of the previous Tamil month Masi, with car festival on the 10th day with the significance of the darshan granted to sage Vyakrapada; 10 day Aadi Pooram in July-August; the Bhoodha Ganas carrying paddy bags to Saint Sundararar on Masi Magam Day in February-March;

Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthi in the temple. Lord Thiagaraja is praised as the Raja-King of Gods. The temple is huge in size and importance, with 9 Rajagopuras, 80 Vimanas, 12 tall walls, 13 mandaps, 15 wells of Theertha importance, 3 gardens, 3 prakaras, 365 Shiva Lingas representing the days of the year, shrines numbering above 100, 86 Vinayaka idols and temples within the temple numbering above 24. The temple is indeed great, huge, tall and a castle of Hindu Faith designed and built in stone. Those worshipping the Face Darshan of Lord Thiagaraja in Tiruvarur are advised to have His Feet darshan (Pada darshan) in Vilamal, 3 km far from this place. The 1000 pillars constructed many years back were meant to make tents (Pandal in Tamil) during festival days. Abishek is not performed to Lord Thiagaraja but to the Maragatha Linga (precious emerald Linga known as Veedhi Vidanga Linga believed to have been worshipped earlier by Indira) at 8.30 a.m., 11.00 a.m. and at 7.00 p.m. each day. After the abishek is over, the Linga would be placed in a silver box with flowers and covered by a silver vessel. This will be then locked in the presence of officials and placed on the right side of Lord Thiagaraja.

Sri Thiagarajar Temple, Tiruvarur-610 001. Tiruvarur district.

It is noteworthy that Tiruvarur Thiagarajar Temple is a very famous temple in Tamilnadu.  To have a thorough look and worship all the shrines, it needs a full day for a devotee.  While we find shrines of other deities in temples small in size, here each one is big in size and importance.  Lords Veedhi Vidanga Vinayaka, Achaleswara (mentioned in Thevaram hymns separately), Mothers, Kamalambal, Neelothpalambal, Roudra Durga, Lord Runa Vimochana, Lords Dakshinamurthy, Annamaleswarar, Vottu Thiageswarar, the temple where Tulasiraja worshipped, Anandeeswarar, Siddheeswarar. Hayagriswarar, the Linga worshipped by Indira, Cheranatha, Pandyanatha, Aadakeswara, Pulasthya Raksheswara, Pulasthya Brahmmeswara, Bhaktheswara, Vilwatheeswara and Lord Padaleswara grace the devotees from these shrines.  Sri Anjaneya Shrine is at the Rajagopura entrance.  People worship here to get back what they lost.  Lord Dharma Sastha graces along with Vinayaka in the shrine at the inner prakara of Mother’s shrine.  The shrine of Lord Mattru Uraitha Vinayaka – Vinayaka who confirmed the quality touch of the gold coin-is on the bank of the tank opposite the West Tower-Gopura.  A canal called Sengazhuneer Odai is just a km from the temple.

Devotees pray to Rahukala Durga for promotion and favourable transfers.  Lord Shanmuga protects His devotees from enemies.  Devotees pray to Mother Neelotpalambal and consume the nivedhana milk of the Arthajama Puja to get children.  Lord Runa Vimochana Perumal relieves His devotees from debt burdens and ailments.

Devotees pray to presiding deity Lord Thiagaraja for wedding, child, high ranks in education, employment opportunities, progress in trade and profession and promotion boons.  Prayer to Lord Vanmeekanatha purifies the devotee of his/her sins, eliminates bad traits in him/her as arrogance etc. and grants many boons including prosperity.  Students pray at the Akshara Peeta-a small mount with letters-for gaining excellence in education.

Devotees pray to Lord Brahmma Nandhi behind Lord Veedi Vidanga Vinayaka and fill the tub with water seeking rain. They offer Arugu-grass to Him and feed their cows for milk yield. Mother Kamalambal grants wisdom to devotees and even dumbs become teachers to Guru Bhagwan-Jupiter. People offer milk rice nivedhana to Mother on Navami day in Purattasi (September-October) for salvation. Those suffering from fever and seeking longevity offer Pepper Rasam to Lord Juradeva. Usual commitments as feeding-Annadhanam-, distributing the nivedhana to devotees, contribution for the renovation of the temple are also followed. For total success in life, devotees perform Mukundarchana to Lord Thiagarajar which was performed by Lord Vishnu. Emperor Mushukunda also did this for success.

A demon Satya Gupta by name was a threat to Devas.  He was caught in the aspect of Sani Bhagwan-Planet Saturn.  Enraged, he began to fight with the planets.  The planets appealed to Lord Shiva for protection.  Lord Shiva protected the planets from the demon on condition that they should ever be soft to His devotees.  Hence, the planets are on straight line facing the Lord.  Lord Vinayaka is also in this shrine monitoring them whether they are soft to Shiva devotees.  It thus became the rule that though devotees visit Tirunallaru for Saturn reliefs, they should visit Tiruvarur also for worship for total relief.

Of the 84 Vinayakas in the temple, four are highly revered.  Those suffering from nervous problems and high tensions, pray to Nadukkam Theertha Vinayaka-Vinayaka protecting from trembling.  Women pray to Mattru Uraitha Vinayaka in the West Gopuram gate before buying jewels as He confirmed the touch quality of the gold awarded by Lord Shiva to Saint Sundarar.  Lord Mooladhara Ganapathi appears reclining and dancing on a blossomed Lotus near a five headed serpent.  Those practicing yoga worship here.  Lord Vadhabi Gnapathi graces the devotees from the first prakara of Lord’s shrine.  Great Carnatic Musician Sri Muthuswamy Dishitha, one among the Trinity of Carnatic Music heritage, sang the famous song “Vadhabi Ganapathim Baje” from this shrine which musicians sing first in their concerts.
Presiding Lord Vanmeeka Nathar appears gracefully wearing the crescent moon on His head.  So Mother Kamalambal grants darshan to Her devotees with this Crescent Moon jewel.  She represents Mothers Saraswathi, Parvathi and Mahalakshmi holding a flower in the right hand, keeping the left on the hip and legs on a Yoga posture as an Empress.

It is the custom in Shiva Temples to end the Thevaram hymn chanting with the word Tiru Chittrambalam as followed in Chidambaram temple, considered to be first among all Shiva temples in the state.  But the antiquity of Tiruvarur temple is more ancient, hence, this word is not chanted here.
The Car (Rath) of Tiruvarur is biggest in size and beautiful in the make.
Lord Shiva had played 364 miracles (Tiruvilayadal in Tamil) in Tiruvarur alone.  As salvation is a certainty for those born in Tiruvarur, Yama the God of Death had no work here.  He prayed to Lord and took the place of Chandikeswara.  Those with fear of death pray here.  Those joyous of the face darshan of Lord in Tiruvarur also visits Vilamal temple, 3 km from here, for Feet Darshan for complete satisfaction.   The Feet Darshan secret is said to be behind the sanctum sanctorum of Lord.
Aadi Pooram festival (July-August) is celebrated for procession deity Manonmani.  Akasha Bhairava above the Kamalambika tower is acting as a custodian deity.   Lord Bhairava of the temple is praised as Siddhi Bhairava.  Kamalamuni Siddhar Peetam is near the sanctum sanctorum of Mother Kamalambika on the right side.

Siva Surya graces from the prakara of Lord Shiva Shrine.  He looks tall.  Those facing debt burdens pray to Runa Vimochana Easwara.  Lord Thiagaraja grants darshan on the Tiruvadhirai day in December from the Raja Narayana Mandap.  There are Ashta (eight) Durga shrines in the temple.  Sri Muthuswami Dishithar had sung the glory of the Durgas in his celebrated Keerthanas.
Abishek is dedicated to Mother Mahalakshmi with gold coins on Deepavali in October-November and on Akshaya Tritiya day in April-May by devotees.

Lord Dakshinamurthi graces from the outer wall of Ambika shrine with six disciples, though generally only four are with Him in other Shiva temples.
Mother Neelotpalambal graces from a separate shrine with a maid holding Lord Muruga.  The idol of mother is beautifully made as if She is touching the head of Her beloved son Muruga.
We see Mother Saraswathi with a Veena only.  She does not hold one here but graces the devotees in a penance posture.  Lord Hayagriva, in his own shrine appears performing Shiva Puja.  He is praised as Hayagriswarar.  Students pray to Mother Saraswathi and Lord Hayagriswarar to shine in their academic pursuits.

A contest arose in the celestial world on the integrity level in people.  Yama the God of Death claimed the title.  But Maharshi Narada denied His right and said that King Manu Needhi Chola alone deserved the title.  Yama came to earth in the guise of a cow with a calf.  Prince Veedhi Vidangan was coming on the royal street of the city. The calf was caught under the wheels and was killed in the accident.  The Mother Cow (Yama) rushed to the king’s palace and sought justice from the king-Manu Needhi Cholan.  The king decided that he also should endure and suffer the pain of losing a child as the cow.  He drove the rath on the body of his son, delivered justice with life for life.  Yama appeared before the king recognizing his integrity and sense of justice to non-humans too and disappeared.  This episode is depicted in a stone rath sculpture placed in the northeast corner of the temple.
Generally, Nandhi is seen in a sitting position in Shiva temples except in Saptha Vidanga places around Tiruvarur.  All of them are metal idols.

In temples facing east, Lord’s procession also begins from east facing entrance.  In Tiruvarur, the procession begins from the northeast entrance called Vittavasal.  Emperor Mushukunda installed the Linga in the temple which he got from Indira.  But Indira wanted to take back the Linga to his own Devaloka.  It is believed that Indira is waiting at the east entrance to use the opportunity when Lord passes through this gate.  To fool Indira, the devotees are taking Lord in procession through the northeast entrance, so that he may not enter the temple to steal the Linga.  Even majority of the devotees use the northeast gate only to enter the temple avoiding the east.

Tiruvarur is the only temple that has more number of Thevaram hymns-353, Ganasambandar 55, Tirunavukkarasar 208 and Sundarar 87 and Manickavasagar 3.

It is noteworthy that Mother Kamalambikai is greatly revered as a total personification of the devotional hymn Lalitha Sahasra Nama.  Hence, the Theertha is praised as Kamalalayam.  Bathing in this Theertha on the Panguni Uthiram day in March-April is considered equal to 12 Mahamagam bath in Kumbakonam.  It should be noted that Mahamagam occurs only once in 12 years.

It is also noteworthy that Pradosha puja is performed in this temple every day – known as Nitya Pradosham – from 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. though it is performed once in a fortnight in other temples.  It is said that all the Devas – 33 crore in  number (Muppathu Mukkodi in Tamil) are worshipping Lord Thiagaraja during this puja.  The devotee worshipping the Lord in the evening is blessed by all Gods, it is believed.

Indira had to face a battle against the demons.  He was able to win the war with the help of Emperor Mushukunda.  As a token of his gratitude to the emperor, Indira wanted to present a gift and asked what he wanted.  Mushukunda asked for the Shivalinga in Indira’s possession which was worshipped by Lord Vishnu keeping it on His chest.  Indira did not want to part with the Linga.  He made a trick with divine sculptor Mayan making six such Lingas and presented them to the emperor.  Mushukunda found them fake.  With no means to convince the emperor, Indira offered the Original Shivalinga along with the six new ones too making the total to 7.  The original Shiva Linga is in Tiruvarur.  Other six are installed in other temples all collectively known as Saptha Vidanga Sthalas.  Saptha in Sanskrit means seven.  They are installed as 1) Veedhi Vidangar in Tiruvarur, 2) as Nagara Vidangar in Tirunallaru, 3) as Sundara Vidangar in Nagapattinam, 4) as Avani Vidangar in Tirukuvalai, 5) as Neela Vidangar in Tiruvaimur, 6) as Bhuvani Vidangar in Vedaranyam and 7) as Adi Vidangar in Tirukaravasal.  These Lingas are tiny in size and could be held in hand.  These places are called Saptha Vidanga Sthalas where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Thiagarajar.

Repeat Namasivaya ten million times

The Lord of the temple is praised by saint Thirunavukkarasar in his Thevaram hymns.  This is the 103rd Lord Shiva temples on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Lords Vishnu, Brahmma, Vinayaka, Muruga and Indira, Sages Sukha Muni and Agasthya had worshipped Lord in this temple performing pujas.

A king Vasudevan by name visited a number of Shiva temples seeking child boon.  They worshipped with all devotion Lord Nellaiappar in Tirunelveli.  Pleased with their prayer, Lord made Mother Parvathi to be their daughter and Mother Chamundeeswari Her nurse.  When the royal couple was bathing in Tambiraparani, they found a conch floating on a lotus.  When they picked up the conch, it became a child.  They named the child Rajarajeswari.  As decided by the Lord, Chamundeeswari one of the Saptha Madhas became the nurse of the child Raja Rajeswari.  Rajarajeswari mastered all the arts and the Chess in particular.  The king announced that the one who won his daughter in Chess would have her hand.  But none could win her.

The king, as advised by a sage took on a pilgrimage with his queen, daughter, her nurse Chamundeeswari and his convoy.  Lord in the guise of a Siddha met the king and claimed that he was master of chess game.  The king welcomed the siddha to play with his daughter.  Lord in the guise of Siddha won the game and appeared in His true form granting darshan to all.  The divine wedding took place with all its due pomp and splendour.  As Lord won the chess game-Chaturangam in Tamil, came to be praised as Chaturanga Vallaba Nathar.  Ambica and Her nurse Chamundeeswari bless the devotees from their respective shrines.  Lord joined them to stay in the place.  The temple came into being.

Sri Chaturanga Vallabha Nathar Temple, Poovanur-612 803, Needamangalam Taluk, Tiruvarur district.

Sivan is the beginning and end of all things

The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirugnanasambandar. This is the 3rd Shiva temple on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Sri Uchinathar Temple, Sivapuri – 608 002, Via Annamalainagar, Cuddalore district.

The temple has one prakara.  The Rajagopuram is facing east. Lord is facing east and Ambica south.

Parents perform the Anna Prasana ritual (first rice feeding of the child) in the temple hoping that the child would never face food problem in life.

This is one of the sacred places where Lord Shiva granted darshan to Sage Agasthya. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi appear in their wedding posture behind the Shivalinga.  During his stay in Chidambaram, Sambandar used to come to this temple everyday to worship the Lord.  The places around Chidambaram were once green with paddy fields, hence the name of the place Tirunelvoyil, presently called Sivapuri.  The temple is in this place.  After Mother Parvathi fed Gnanasambandar with Wisdom Milk (Gnanappal in Tamil), Lord Shiva too offered food to the saint.

The wedding of Gnanasambandar was arranged when he was 12.  The relatives of both sides and 63 shiva devotees travelled to Achalpuram Shiva temple.  It was midday.  All in the party were hungry and stayed at Sivapuri.  Knowing their suffering from hunger, Lord in the guise of the temple priest fed the party with a delicious lunch.  Lord is praised as Uchi Nathar (meaning Midday Lord and  Madhyaneswarar in Sanskrit).  People of the place call this temple Kanakambal Koil.

beautiful Lord Thirumeni Azhagar

Saint Tirugnanasambandar has praised the Lord in his Thevaram hymns. The tower is clothed by the clouds, Mayendirapalli has many palaces, tanks with blossoming Lotus flowers where the Lord is on His bull vehicle. Let us all prostrate on His feet. This is the sixth temple on the northern bank of Cauvery River praised in Thevaram hymns.

Sri Chandikeswara graces with his consort in the prakara. There is a separate shrine for Lord Sri Vinayaka with Ragu and Ketu on both sides. Lord Muruga graces from His shrine with His consorts Valli and Deivanai. There are shrines of Sri Kasiviswanatha – Mother Visalakshi, Meenakshi Sundareswarar, Bhairavar and Saneeswarar-Saturn, Sun and Moon. There is no shrine for Navagrahas- 9 planets in the temple.

Handsome Shiva is praised as Tirumeni Azhagar and Mother as Vadivambikai for their beauty. Saint Tirugnanasambandar addresses the Lord as Azhagar. Lord Shiva is Azhagar in this temple. Lord Brahmma, Sun and Moon had worshipped in this temple. During the month of Panguni (March-April) the rays of Sun fall on the Lord. On the side wall of Shriva Shrine, Lord Dakshinamurthy graces.

For his wrong desire on Akalika wife of Maharshi Gautama, Indira was cursed by the Rishi to have eyes throughout his body. He came to Earth and prayed to Lord Shiva for relief in many places and this is one among them. As Indira – Maha Indira worshipped here the place came to be known as Mahendirapalli. A temple was erected here later.

worship the Lord you can live ever with increasing happiness.

The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of three Saivite saints.   “Are you determined to surrender to Lord of Tiruvetkalam   Wearing the crescent Moon, wealthy blessing you ever   Then your woes would vanish, fate will not follow you   Develop that skill of devotion, that is purpose of life.”      - Tirunavukkarasar   This is the second temple on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Thillai Chidambaram is the first of sacred Shiva Sthalas praised in Thevaram hymns followed by Tiruvetkalam. Lord is a swayambumurthi.

The temple is built by Pallava kings strictly following the temple architecture rules with bricks.  In the year 1914, this was renovated with stones by Peddha Perumal Chettiar of Kanadukathan.  Presently, the temple is facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram.  In the four pillars in Ambica shrines, there are sculptures depicting Arjuna storing his weapons, Arjuna performing penance standing on one leg, Lord Shiva in the guise of a hunter and Arjuna fighting with Lord.

Lords Nardana Vinayaka, Siddhi Vinayaka, Anugraha Dakshinamurthy are in the prakara.  Sun and Moon are next to each other.  Worshipping the planets during eclipse times is devotionally followed in the temple.

The antiquity of Tiruvetkalam dates back to over 2000 years.  It is here Lord Shiva granted the Pasupatha missile to Arjuna.  Mother Nallanayaki graces the devotees with four hands holding Lotus and Neelotpala flowers in two hands.  There is a Nandhi in Her shrine also.  When Sambandar came to Chidambaram to have the darshan of Lord Nataraja, he stayed here and mentions this place in his hymns as Nannagar-Good City.  His hymn Pennin Nallal was sung in this place praising the mother.  Saint Arunagirinathar had praised Lord Muruga in this temple in his Tirupugazh hymns.

Arjuna the celebrated archer of Bharath was advised by Lord Krishna to perform penance on Lord Shiva to get the Pasupatha missile to win the Kurukshetra war though he got many such from his father Indira.  Obeying the advice of Lord Krishna, he came to this place dense with bamboo trees.  Duryodhana, as is habitual of him, sent demon Mookasura as a wild pig to spoil Arjuna’s penance.  Knowing his design, Lord Shiva set out with Mother Parvathi as a hunter.  Four Vedas followed the Lord in the form of dogs.  Lord shot an arrow on the pig while Arjuna also shot one simultaneously.  A debate arose between Lord and Arjuna whose arrow killed the demon.  The debate turned into a fight between the two.  The Pandava struck the Lord with his bow the impact of which fell on every being in the world.  Lord Shiva tossed Arjuna with His toe.  He fell in the Krupa Kadaksham spring.  Mother Parvathi grew angry on Arjuna when he struck on the Lord but Lord stopped Her saying that a Mother should only be loving and addressed Her ‘Sarguna’ meaning a person with calm traits.   Arjuna had the benefit of the touch of Lord’s feet when He tossed him.  Lord granted darshan to Arjuna with Mother Parvathi and the Pasupatha he wished.  The bow-blow scar on the Shivalinga is visible even now.

people of the world!
you go and worship the Lord of crowded golden matted locks who resides in tiruvētkaḷam.
your sins will greatly go away from us daily and become extinct.
you can live ever with increasing happiness.

one who destroyed the Kāmaṉ holding a cruel bow of sugar-cane.
one who destroyed the cities with the cruel bow made of a mountain If I live worshipping with my folded hands vētkaḷam desired by the Lord of great attachment towards his devotees.
there will be no trouble for me.

the vētiyaṉ;
one who gave out the vētams;
one who is considered the highest among the tēvars our Lord vēṭkaḷam is fixed in rhyme will ride upon bulls;
the bulls are of several kinds;
the bull which is the embodiment of aṟam, tirumāl who carried him during the destruction of the three cities and intiraṉ;
so the plural is used he will bathe himself in all the five products got from the cow it is called in sanskrit pancakavviyam if we worship his feet as valuable as gold, with flowers.
the Lord with a black neck will protect us.

there will no affliction for us;
there will no bonds which are difficult to be removed.
one who is as happy as the bridegroom and wears a growing white crescent.
the Lord of all riches.
if people are capable of worshipping with their hands tiruvēṭkaḷam.
that is the right path;
you clearly see that.

hereafter there no will be suffering of being born again.
there will be no suffering in this birth.
one who has a neck as blue as a faultless sapphire, and who is dependable.
the Lord who is the embodiment of happiness and who is my wealth in gold, residing in the good city of vētkaḷam our duty is to praise his red feet The rhyme in this verse is peculiar.

Having undergone hardships and not falling into anxieties worries before the life which is capable of doing many things ebbs out of this body quickly.
when we worship with the hands tiruvēṭkaḷam of the Lord who is the embodiment of knowledge.
the violent actions done and appearing to give their fruits will flee away.

the Lord who has on his half Umai who has round and soft breasts.
one who has the eight forms, the supreme one, who is two by himself and his consort, the trinity the creator, protector and destroyer Eight forms: the five elements, the sun, and the moon, and the person who performs sacrifices;
it is called ashtamūrttam worshipping with the hands tiruvēṭkaḷam where learned men gather together.
Be desiring that.
my ignorant mind!

the one whom we can depend upon.
one who has Umai who has round breasts on which a bodice is worn the embodiment of all knowledge.
think with pleasure by your inclinations of mind, his residence, tiruvēṭkaḷam.

the strong defences which had big and circular walls of enclosure.
Though he has burnt them according to a principle.
the Lord who is in beautiful tiruvēṭkaḷam he is the embodiment of learning who will console those who circumambulate him, removing their strong sins which are deep-rooted.

one who removed the big and fertile mountain on which the great god resides, running towards it.
who pressed with his feet to make rāvaṇaṉ perish and his ten heads to be crushed, and then removed the lotus feet.
people of this world!
reach vēṭkaḷam where the Lord who once assumed the form of a hunter resides.

Avatar of Mahalakshmi

Moolavar : Siddha Natheswarar
Urchavar : Somaskandar
Historical Name: Siddheeswaram

The temple is praised by Saints Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar.This is the 65th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Lord Shiva is Swayambumurthy. As this is the Avatar place of Mother Mahalakshmi, she is endearingly named Mazhalai (sweet speech of infants) Mahalakshmi and dressed in skirts and gowns.

Sri Siddhanatheswarar Temple, Tirunarayur-612 102. Thanjavur district.

This is west facing temple. Lord Aanda Vinayaka welcomes the devotees with His blessings.  Mother Soundarya Nayaki graces from a separate shrine.  She is decorated with sandal paste on the last Friday of Thai month-January-February.  Lord Dakshinamurthy blesses devotees from a shrine near that of Mother Mahalakshmi facing west against the traditional direction of south.  Navagraha shrine is opposite to this.  Those facing adverse effects of planets pray to Lord Dakshinamurthy and the planets.  The presence of three Chandikeswaras in the prakara is a special feature in the temple.  Mother Durga on the goshta wall is praised as Prasanna Durga.  Mother with eight hands looks soft and stylish with Her right leg forward.  This is a rare posture.  Lords Umai Oru Bagan, Bikshandava, Brahmma are near this shrine.  There are also shrines in the prakara for Saptha Kannikas, Panchalingas, Aanda Vinayaka, Kala Bhairava, Veera and Bhairava.

This is the place of Avatar of Mahalakshmi.  She wedded Lord Perumal and is gracing the devotees from the nearby Nachiarkoil.  Presents as silk sari, bathing items as oil and soapnut powder, cooking pot (Pongal Panai) jaggery and such gifts are sent from this temple (Her birth house) on Pongal, Deepavali festival days.  Lord Shiva and Mother Ambica visit this Perumal temple the day next to Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January.  Mother Mahalakshmi is an infant in this temple.  She is dressed with skirt and gowns as a child and is praised as Mazhalai Mahalakshmi.  Gomatha (cow) puja and yajna are performed in this shrine on Fridays and on full moon days with 108 lotus flowers.  Lord Muruga is in a separate shrine nearby. Gorakkar, a siddha had to incur a curse of the Devas and was afflicted with skin diseases.  He came to this place and worshipped Lord Shiva for relief.  Lord granted darshan to Siddha and cured him.  Hence, Lord has the name Siddhanatheswara.  There is a sculpture of Gorakka Siddha in the temple.  Sage Medhavi also is nearby.  Those suffering from skin diseases perform abishek to Siddha with oil on full moon days and Fridays and apply it on their body as a medicine for relief.

Sage Medhavi aspired that Mother Mahalakshmi be born his daughter and prayed to Lord Shiva to realize his wish.  Lord Shiva spoke to Perumal to allow Mother Mahalakshmi to be born the daughter of the sage which Lord Perumal gladly obliged.  Mother Mahalakshmi appeared on a Lotus flower in Panguni Uthira star day in March-April.  Maharshi named Her Vanjula Devi, brought Her up and offered to Perumal as His consort.  Lord Shiva granting darshan to Rishi is gracing the devotees from this temple.

The god who dispenses happiness Ekambara Nathar

Lord Ekambara Nathar is praised by the four saivite saints, Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar.  This is the first Lord Shiva temple in Thondainadu region praised in Thevaram and Thiruvasagam hymns.

Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthi. The Shiva Linga made of sand by Mother Kamakshi adores the sanctum sanctorum. The symbol of Mother embracing the Linga is still visible. Opposite the sanctum of Lord Ekambareswara are the Spatika Linga facing west and the Spatika Nandhi in the prakara. On the Ratha Sapthami day in the month of Thai (January-February) rays of Sun fall on Lord. Of the Panchabhoodha sthalas, the temple belongs to Earth-Prithvi. There is a Mango tree in the temple dating back to 3,500 years. The divine tree with its four branches representing the four Vedas yields fruits in four flavours – sweet, citric, spicy and bitter.

Procession deity Lord Ekambareswara is in a separate shrine of glass under the Rudraksha Pandal-tent, the roof with 5008 Rudrakshas. Devotees can have the darshan of Lord Shiva in his huge form. According to pundits, this darshan grants the devotee total relief from the cycle of births and deaths. The Spatika Linga prayer blesses the devotee with a beautiful personality removing evil thoughts from the mind. Also the Sahasralinga worshipped by Lord Sri Rama to cleanse Himself from the Brahmmahati dosha and the Ashtothra (108) Lingas are also in the temple. People use to light 108 lamps in this shrine. It should be remembered that gifted Tamil poet Kachiappa Shivacharya who authored the great epic Kanda Puranam (Skaanda Maha Puranam in Sanskrit was authored by Sage Veda Vyasa) and staged it at the Kuamara Kottam Lord Muruga Temple nearby was born in Kancheepuram. Saint Tirunavukkarasar praises Kanchi as a destination of vast learning – Kalviyil Karai Illadha Kanchi Managaram.

by worshipping the Lord who dwells in Tiruvalancuḻi surrounded by Kāviri where big precious stones of pearls are deposited, uttering many times his names to the complete satisfaction of your mouth, cherishing him with love, and singing his fame.
in the world girt by the great ocean.
what great act of virtue you performed among the good acts done in your previous births!
my mind!
[[whether Campantar performed acts of virtue or not is not the doubt.
What was the special act of virtue to be performed to worship Civaṉ in Valancuḻi is the doubt;
that doubt is cleared by the words uttering many times the name of god and singing his fame is the act done by tongue, cherishing him with love is the act of the mind and worshipping is the act of the body]]

the Lord who protected the celestials who worshipped him by drinking the poison that rose in the expansive ocean.
and the one who has on one half a lady on whose treasses of hair bees settle.
by associating ourselves with pleasure with the company of devotees who perform sincere service to, the chief who had as his place valangculi in this world.
our irressistible Karmams have perished leaving.

the two feet of the master who dwelt in valancuḻi as his place, which were praised by the celestials who do not wink.
are capable of destroying the cities of enemies by setting fire to them.
protect his devotees affectionately at the time of disaster.
they come to devotees in response to their piety.
are also remedy to physical diseases and mental worries which are the products of confusion.
are mantiram.

Civaṉ has a black neck.
has the colour of the scorching sun.
the great god who sitting joyously under the shade of the banyan tree as the master, inititated the sages into the several aspects moral instruction, in a pleasing manner.
he will recite the vētams with the appropriate intonation.
we are unable to comprehend the marvel of that god dancing standing in the cremation ground which is difficult to dwell, to make the Kaḻal and cilampu to make a big sound, having rejoiced to stay in valancuḻi as his place which has floods coming perennially.

Civaṉ has the earth as one of his forms.
has water as one of his forms.
has the sky and air as his forms.
has the form of fire which has the power of consuming everything.
has a form which cannot be easily distinguished whether it is male or female;
has as on one half a lady.
he has the red colour like the coral which is produced in the ocean.
and does not leave valancuḻi.
those who worship his two feet will speak ever so many things about his greatness that he entered into the minds and thoughts of those who are affectionate to him.

Civaṉ has a form to which no one can compare anything as equal.
he loves two young ladies (Umai and Kankai) many pūtams and pēys are his marks of distinction.
holding a white skull which he does not loathe.
if he comes for alms in every house he is definitely the god in valancuḻi.
he has stolen my bangles with lines.

Civaṉ tells also that he dwells in Kuṉṟiyur, the place of Kutāmūkku, valampuram, and eminent neyttāṉam.
the celestials who do not wink carry out his commands.
we are not able to know the places in addition to these, which are Civaṉ`s shrines.
the lady wearing beautiful ornaments, faints when she thinks that she can reach araṉ in valancuḻi by going to that place.

Umai who speaks words as sweet as the voice of the Kuyil and has a tender waist like the creeper, to be frightened.
fixing his toe firmly on the twenty shoulders and bright crowns of the one (iravaṇaṉ) who lifted, catching hold of the Kayilai which is eminent, and extensive in area.
Civaṉ who sat (as if nothing had happened) with a lady who is as graceful as the peacock.
and our Lord in valancuḻi.
those who can always meditate upon him.
are those who will attain saluation.
others will not attain that.

Piramaṉ who is seated on a (lotus flower) and who maintains the sacrificial fire, and Māl who slept on a serpent bed.
Civaṉ whose feet and head could not be seen (by them) has a vīṇai of sweet music in his beautiful and big hand.
those who go often from left to right walking round the temple at valancuḻi where he resides with joy, will root out accumulated Karmams, and sufferings.

camaṇar and cākkiyar (buddhists) who have no intelligence.
do useless acts by pretending to perform penance.
they talk which is not right conduct do not accept them as true.
(People of their world!
) those who worship without ceasing the Lord in valancuḻi on the bank of the Kāviri of waves which roam about rolling upside down, and which has never failing freshes.
if we speak about their salvation.
it is difficult to define it by words.

on Civaṉ who has a lady as his half.
and the nectar that is in valancuḻi the garland of tamiḻ verses that were revealed though the mouth of Nyaṉacampantaṉ, the brahmin, and the chief of Kāḻi which is famous for fields.
Karmams will not afflict.
wishing for these.
those who learnt with music and those who were pleased to hear these.
sufferings will not come to them in the next birth and in this birth.

Greatness Of Temple
Devendra (Indira) came down to earth with Swetha Vinayaka seeking relief from the curse caused by his wrong behaviour towards Agalya.  He came to this place finally after worshipping various Shiva temples.  Lord Swetha Vinayaka, till then with Indira, wished to stay in this place for ever and prayed to Lord Shiva for the purpose.  Lord Shiva came before Indira as a little boy.  Indira asked the boy to keep his Vinayaka till he came back after worshipping Lord Shiva.
The boy simply put the Vinayaka on the floor and disappeared.  Indira could not find either the boy or his Vinayaka.  He finally found his Vinayaka under the Bali Peeta in the temple but could not lift despite all his efforts.  Indira brought Deva Shilpi (sculptor of great skills), made a Rath car covering the surroundings of the Bali Peeta and tried to pull Vinayaka to his place, but in vain.  A voice said that if Indira worships Vinayaka in this place on each Vinayaka Chaturthi day (occurring in August-September), he would reap the benefit of worshipping Him each day.  It is believed that Indira visits the temple on each Vinayaka Chaturthi to worship Lord Swetha Vinayak.

Lord Swetha Vinayaka is made from sea water foam.  Hence, no abishek is offered nor flowers, vastras or sandal placed on Him.  Only powdered Borneol (Pachai Karpuram) is sprayed on the idol without hand touch.
As Lord Muruga has 6 army camps – Padai Veedu in Tamil – Lord Vinayaka has 10 such in India including the one in this Thiru Valanchuzhi temple.

Lord Vinayaka married here Indiradevi Kamalambal born of the eyes of Lord Maha Vishnu and Buddhi Devi born of the speech of Lord Brahmma in this sacred place, hence, those facing obstacles and problems in their marriage efforts worship Lord Swetha Vinayaka for reliefs.

With the graceful blessings of Lord Swetha Vinayaka, Mother Cauvery River began to flow towards Chola region from the Kamandalam of Sage Agasthya.  Kamandalam is a pot usually carried by sages.  Knowing that Mother Cauvery is flowing towards his kingdom, Chola king Haridwajan went with his men to receive Her with all honours.  While entering this place, respectfully called Shakti Vanam, She circumambulated Lord Shiva (Valam Varudhal in Tamil) and entered through a hole (Piladwara in Sanskrit) in the northeast (Eesanya direction).  Despite all efforts, the king could not bring out Cauvery.  He surrendered at the feet of Sage Heranda performing penance in Kottayur.  The sage came to Thiruvalanchuzui and prayed to Lord Shiva.  Lord Shiva through His voice (Asareeri in Tamil and Sanskrit) said that Cauvery would not come out unless a sage with Jadamudi-thick and long hair- or a king with such Jada entered into the hole.  The king was ready to do this.  But the sage himself entered the hole and made Mother Cauvery come out to benefit a huge number of people in the state.  Mother Cauvery came out from the hole at a place called Melacauvery near Kumbakonam.  As Cauvery came up, the place is named Melacauvery and Tiruvalnchuzhi as She came circumambulating Lord Shiva.

Temple History:

The story of churning the milk ocean to get nectar with Mandara mount as the churning stick (Mathu in Tamil) and Vasuki snake as the churning rope is popular among Hindu believers.  Unable to bear the speed and weight during this operation, Vasuki spit its venom threatening total destruction of all worlds.  Devas surrendered to Lord Shiva.  He said that they began the work without worshipping Lord Vinayaka and advised them to correct the error.  Devas returned to milk ocean, made an idol of Lord Vinayaka with ocean foam and prayed to him and succeeded, thus goes the Sthala Purana.  Vinayaka thus made of the foam is praised as Swetha Vinayaka.  He is the Ishta Devatha of the Devas.

Special Features:

Miracle Based: Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthi. Lord Vinayaka is praised as Swetha Vinayaka as he is made of the ocean foam.
