The Greatness of Sivan Adiyar

Viranmindar was born there in an agricultural family. Holding tight only the feet of the fire like God that are beyond the reach of words, he was dared to root out any bond that was an obstacle. Caring much for the true devotees. Superior is his fame who minds only the Merciful Lord. Praying the abodes of the Almighty who makes abode in the hearts of such devotees and saluting the slaves of the Lord before they could salute him, he traveled through many parts of the land and finally arrived at the town thiruvarur where the Lord rides the minds of the huge devotees also the big chariot in that town. He immersed himself in that beautiful shiva for whom the vedas became the chariot.

In the thiruvarur there was a hall called dhevachiriyam mandapam, where the great slaves of the blue throated Lord assemble and praise the simple and sweet shiva. Blessed are those who had the golden opportunity to see them, hear them follow them and serve them ! What else one requires to get liberation other than moving with those great bunch of fragrant followers !! Viranmindar prostrated to that people in the right path towards the Truth and stayed with them. One day when Sundharar who considers himself as the slave of the slave of the slaves of the Shankara went straight into the altar of the temple without saluting the devotees in the dhevachiriyam hall. Actually he was praying the Lord when can he get blessed by saluting those marvelous devotees

Viranmindar who noticed sundharar proceeding without prostrating to the crowd of devotees said angrily, "That sundharar who didn't know to pay respect to the devotees is no longer one in us." "The Lord who blesses him who proceeds without saluting the slaves also is not one among us", he continued out of his extreme respect for devotees. The Lord who accepts even the scoldings of the devotees as the praises done with the best coined words enjoyed this love and angry words as well and blessed viranmindar. He gave the first line to chundharar to sing the greatness of devotees. chundharar composed that as the great gem thiruththondaththokai which is the basic source for this periya puranam.

What else can be more fame than saying that Viranmindar was the principle person who was instrumental in getting the excellent thiruththondath thokai from Sundharar. Living long in this world which is meant for love and worship, upholding the respect of the devotees, that great devotee Viranmindar stayed in a right way under the graceful feet of the Lord heading the army of the God. Let the emphasis that is clearly given by Viranminda nayanar for the respect one should give to the reverend devotees of the Lord stay in the mind.

தில்லைவாழ் அந்தணர்தம் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    திருநீல கண்டத்துக் குயவனார்க் கடியேன்
இல்லையே என்னாத இயற்பகைக்கும் அடியேன்
   இளையான்றன் குடிமாறன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
வெல்லுமா மிகவல்ல மெய்ப்பொருளுக் கடியேன்
   விரிபொழில்சூழ் குன்றையார் விறன்மிண்டற் கடியேன்
அல்லிமென் முல்லையந்தார் அமர்நீதிக் கடியேன்
   ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.
2.
இலைமலிந்த வேல்நம்பி எறிபத்தற் கடியேன்
    ஏனாதி நாதன்றன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
கலைமலிந்த சீர்நம்பி கண்ணப்பற் கடியேன்
    கடவூரிற் கலயன்றன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
மலைமலிந்த தோள்வள்ளல் மானக்கஞ் சாறன்
    எஞ்சாத வாட்டாயன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
அலைமலிந்த புனல்மங்கை ஆனாயற் கடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.
3.
மும்மையால் உலகாண்ட மூர்த்திக்கு மடியேன்
    முருகனுக்கும் உருத்திர பசுபதிக்கும் அடியேன்
செம்மையே திருநாளைப் போவாற்கும் அடியேன்
    திருக்குறிப்புத் தொண்டர்தம் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
மெய்ம்மையே திருமேனி வழிபடா நிற்க
    வெகுண்டெழுந்த தாதைதாள் மழுவினால் எறிந்த
அம்மையான் அடிச்சண்டிப் பெருமானுக் கடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.

திருநின்ற செம்மையே செம்மையாக் கொண்ட
    திருநாவுக் கரையன்றன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
பெருநம்பி குலச்சிறைதன் அடியார்க்கு மடியேன்
    பெருமிழலைக் குறும்பற்கும் பேயார்க்கும் அடியேன்
ஒருநம்பி அப்பூதி அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    ஒலிபுனல்சூழ் சாத்தமங்கை நீலநக்கற் கடியேன்
அருநம்பி நமிநந்தி யடியார்க்கு மடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.

வம்பறா வரிவண்டு மணநாற மலரும்
   மதுமலர்நற் கொன்றையான் அடியலாற் பேணா
எம்பிரான் சம்பந்தன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
   ஏயர்கோன் கலிக்காமன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
நம்பிரான் திருமூலன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
   நாட்டமிகு தண்டிக்கும் மூர்க்கற்கும் அடியேன்
அம்பரான் சோமாசி மாறனுக்கும் அடியேன்
   ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.

வார்கொண்ட வனமுலையாள் உமைபங்கன் கழலே
    மறவாது கல்லெறிந்த சாக்கியற்கும் அடியேன்
சீர்கொண்ட புகழ்வள்ளல் சிறப்புலிக்கும் அடியேன்
    செங்காட்டங் குடிமேய சிறுத்தொண்டற் கடியேன்
கார்கொண்ட கொடைக்கழறிற் றறிவாற்கும் அடியேன்
    கடற்காழிக் கணநாதன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
ஆர்கொண்ட வேற்கூற்றன் களந்தைக்கோன் அடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.

பொய்யடிமை யில்லாத புலவர்க்கும் அடியேன்
    பொழிற்கருவூர்த் துஞ்சிய புகழ்ச்சோழற் கடியேன்
மெய்யடியான் நரசிங்க முனையரையற் கடியேன்
    விரிதிரைசூழ் கடல்நாகை அதிபத்தற் கடியேன்
கைதடிந்த வரிசிலையான் கலிக்கம்பன் கலியன்
    கழற்சத்தி வரிஞ்சையர்கோன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
ஐயடிகள் காடவர்கோன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.
8.
கறைக்கண்டன் கழலடியே காப்புக்கொண் டிருந்த
    கணம்புல்ல நம்பிக்கும் காரிக்கும் அடியேன்
நிறைக்கொண்ட சிந்தையான் நெல்வேலி வென்ற
    நின்றசீர் நெடுமாறன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
துறைக்கொண்ட செம்பவளம் இருளகற்றுஞ் சோதித்
    தொன்மயிலை வாயிலான் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
அறைக்கொண்ட வேல்நம்பி முனையடுவாற் கடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.

கடல்சூழ்ந்த உலகெலாங் காக்கின்ற பெருமான்
   காடவர்கோன் கழற்சிங்கன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
மடல்சூழ்ந்த தார்நம்பி இடங்கழிக்கும் தஞ்சை
   மன்னவனாஞ் செருத்துணைதன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
புடைசூழ்ந்த புலியதள்மேல் அரவாட ஆடி
   பொன்னடிக்கே மனம்வைத்த புகழ்த்துணைக்கும் அடியேன்
அடல்சூழ்ந்த வேல்நம்பி கோட்புலிக்கும் அடியேன்
   ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.
10.
பத்தராய்ப் பணிவார்கள் எல்லார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    பரமனையே பாடுவார் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
சித்தத்தைச் சிவன்பாலே வைத்தார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    திருவாரூர்ப் பிறந்தார்கள் எல்லார்க்கும் அடியேன்
முப்போதுந் திருமேனி தீண்டுவார்க் கடியேன்
    முழுநீறு பூசிய முனிவர்க்கும் அடியேன்
அப்பாலும் அடிச்சார்ந்தார் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்
    ஆரூரன் ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் காளே.
11.

மன்னியசீர் மறைநாவன் நின்றவூர்ப் பூசல்
    வரிவளையாள் மானிக்கும் நேசனுக்கும் அடியேன்
தென்னவனாய் உலகாண்ட செங்கணாற் கடியேன்
    திருநீல கண்டத்துப் பாணனார்க் கடியேன்
என்னவனாம் அரனடியே அடைந்திட்ட சடையன்
    இசைஞானி காதலன் திருநாவ லூர்க்கோன்
அன்னவனாம் ஆரூரன் அடிமைகேட் டுவப்பார்
    ஆரூரில் அம்மானுக் கன்பரா வாரே.

Meaning of this pathigam 
I who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr.
the slave of the devotees of the brahmins who are in Tillai.
the slave of Tirunīlakaṇṭar of the potter caste;
am the slave of Iyaṟpakai who never said ``I have nothing to give`` to supplicants.
am the slave of the devotees of Māṟaṉ of Ilayāṉkuṭi.
am the slave of Meypporuḷ who was very greatly victorious on his belief.

I, who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr. 
am the slave of the eminent person of distinction who holds a weapon of sharp edge am the slave to the devotees of ēṉāti nātaṉ ēṉāti is the title conferred on commanders in chief of armies A ring is also presented to him by the king;
am the slave to Kaṇṇappan, the elite among men, who is highly eulogized in caiva literature: like tiruvācakam, two Kaṇṇappa tēvar tirumaṟams Kayilai pāti Kālatti pāli antāti;
am the slave to the devotees of Kalayaṉ of Kaṭavūr.
am the slave to both Māṉakkañcaṟaṉ of unbounded liberality and who had strong shoulders like the mountain, and Tāyaṉ who had a sickle and who never was lax in his service to god.
am the slave to Āṉāyaṉ of Maṅkai which has plenty of water having waves.

I, who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr. 
am slave to Mūrtti also who ruled the Pāṇṭiyanatu with the help of three things That is: sacred ash, uruttirākkam and caṭai coiled into a crown am slave to Murukaṉ and Uruttira Pacupati am slave to Nandāṉar who was otherwise called tirunālaippōvar who went to Citamparam with a steady mind.
am slave to the devotees of Tirukkuṟipputtoṅṭar.
am slave to the great Caṅṭi who approached the feet of Civaṉ who was capable of granting eternal bliss and who cut his father`s feet with a battle axe, the father out of anger, rose to commit some wrong things and actually committed them, when Caṅti was worshipping the holy form of Civaṉ an improvised linkam of sand net as a child`s play but the continuation of the act of having performed worship in previous births

am the slave the devotees of Tirunāvukkaraiyaṉ who thought that the rectitude which has permanent happiness is the only moral uprightness.
am the slave to the devotees of Kulacciṟai who had the title of Perunampi am the slave to Perumiḻaikkuṟumpar and Pēyār;
Pēyār is Karaikkālammaiyār;
she get the body of a pēy as a boon from Lord Civaṉ;
she refers to herself as Kāraikkaṟpēy in three of her four works included in the eleventh Tirumuṟai.

am the slave to Nīlanakkaṉ who is a native of Cattamanakai which is surrounded by roaring water.
am the slave to the devotees of Nanti who is an eminent person of rare distinction

am the slave of the devotees of Campantaṉ, our Lord, who did not worship the feet of any other god except the feet of Civaṉ who wears koṉṟai flowers with honey which blossom to add fragrance to the bees with lines and from which fragrance never;
This closely follows what campantar tells about himself am the slave of the devotees of Ēyar Kōṉ Kalikkāmaṉ.
am the slave of the devotees of Tirumūlaṉ, our master.
am slave to Taṇṭi who got perfect eyesight though born blind through the grace of Civaṉ, and mūrkkaṉ, am the slave of Cōmāci Māṟaṉ who was a native of Ampar

I who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr. 
am the slave of Cākkiyaṉ who threw stones without forgetting his routine, at the feet of Civaṉ who has as a half Umai who has beautiful breasts wearing a bodice.
am the slave of Cirappuli, a person of unbounded liberality and eminent fame.
am the slave of Ciṟuttoṇtaṉ who lived in Ceṅkāṭṭaṇkuṭi.
am the slave of Kaḻaṟiṟṟu Aṟivāṉ whose liberality was like that of the cloud which expects no reward.
am the slave of Kaṇamātaṉ of Kāḻi which has sea on the eastern side.
am the slave of the chief of Kaḷantai, who bore the name of Kūṟṟaṉ and who had a vāl of sharp end.

I who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr. 
am slave to the poets who were sincere in their piety This refers to a group.
am the slave to Puḵaḻccāḻaṉ who died in Karuvūr having gardens am the slave of Narasiṅka Muṉai Araiyaṉ who was a faithful devotee.
am the slave of Atipattaṉ of Nākai on the shore of the sea, which has large waves surrounding it.
Nākai is the corruption of Nākappaṭṭiṉam.
am the slave of Kalikkampaṉ who had a bow fastened with bands, who cut his wife`s hand with a sword;
See periya purāṇam, Kalikkampa nāyaṉār, 7-8 am the slave of the devotees of Catti, who was the chief of Variñcai, and who was wearing kaḻal.
am the slave of the devotees of Aiyaṭikal Kāṭavar Kōṉ Kāṭavar is a branch of pallavas;
his work is included in the Eleventh Tirumuṟai

am the slave of the devotees of Vāyilāṉ of ancient Mayilai in which the red coral which was washed by the waves in the ghat emitted rays to dispel darkness.
am the slave of Muṉai Atuvaṉ, an eminent person of distinction who had a vāḷ which cut the heads of his enemies;
He enlisted himself as a mercenary in any army when anybody sought his help

am the slave to the devotees of Ciṅkaṉ wearing Kaḻal, who belongs to the branch, Kāṭavar and the great one who ruled over all the world girt by the ocean.
He is Raja Simha who built the Kailāca Nātha temple in Kāñcipuram.
am the slave to Itaṅkaḻi, the eminent person who wore a garland of petals and to the devotees of Ceruttuṇai who is the chief of Tañcai This Tañcai is different from the head-quarters of the Tanjāvūr district where the temple of Peruvuṭaiyār is situated;
it is situated in Marukal Nāṭu, a sub-division of the Cōḻa country;
am the slave of famous Pukaḻttuṇai whose mind was always at the feet of Civaṉ who danced to make the cobra, tied on the tiger`s skin which was worn round the waist, to dance am the slave of eminent person Kōṭpuli, who possessed a vēl which was thinking of victory;

am slave to all those who pay obeisance to Civaṉ as his devotees.
am the slave of the devotees of those who sing the praises of the supreme god Civaṉ only.
am the slave of those who minds are thinking of Civaṉ only.
am the slave of all those who were born in Tiruvārūr.
am the slave of those who have the privilege of touching the holy body of Civan civaliṅkam and performing worship, all the three times in a day morning, noon and evening am the slave of those sages who smear the whole of their bodies with sacred ash.
am the slave of the devotees of those who attained the feet of Civaṉ beyond the boundaries of Tamiḻ Nāṭu.

I who am known by the name of Ārūraṉ and who am the slave to the god, as father in Ārūr.
am the slave of Pūcal of Niṉṟavūr whose mouth was always chanting the Vētam of everlasting fame, of Māṉi with bangles having lines, and of Nēcaṉ.
Māṉi was the queen of Neṭumāṟaṉ, the hero of Pāṇṭikkōvai.
am the slave of Ceṅkaṇāṉ who ruled as Pāṇtiyaṉ the Paṇtiyaṉ country also.
am the slave of Tirunīlakaṇṭar of the pāṇar caste He played on the yāḻ the hymns of campantar.
those whose hearts rejoice and melt on hearing the state of being the slave of Ārūraṉ Cuntarar who is such a great person the chief of the people of Tirunāvalūr and the son of Icaiñāṉi and Caṭaiyaṉ who approached the feet of Araṉ who is my god by right.
will become devotees of the father in Ārūr.

The Tiruth-Tonda-Thokai 
Periya Puranam - The Puranam of Viran Mindar 

1. It is a country gained by Parasu Rama 
The tapaswi great who hailed the ankleted feet 
Of the Lord, the wearer of konrai chapleted fragrant 
On His matted hair, and gained for a boon the battle-axe. 
It is Malai Nadu rich with the wealth 
Of the billowy sea, arable lands and mountains. (491) 

2. Bright pearls of sea, pearls from sugarcanes 
That grow in the fields, cool pearls of bamboos, 
And lustrous pearls that fall from the tusks of tuskers: 
These were cunningly threaded into garlands 
By damsels whose white teeth were rows of pearls. 
With these throve Sengkunroor, the first 
Amongst the divine cities of Kerala.   (492) 

3. The glory of this city pervades the whole world; 
With the wealth yielded by fields where teem swans, 
The Brahmins throve thither poised in the way of the Vedas, 
Pure and unsullied as leaders; this city indeed is 
The dwelling place of such great families.   (493) 

4. From this city, to illumine the clan of Velalas 
Hailed he, who clung to the ineffably glorious feet 
Of Lord Siva, and scorned away all other desires; 
He, our deity Viran Mindar was devoted to 
The true servitors, whose greatness is bourneless.   (494) 

5. Impelled by a spiraling love to adore the shrines 
Where the Lord who sports on His matted hair 
The crescent and the Ganga, willingly abides, 
He took to pilgrimage; he would, wherever he went, 
First hail the holy company ripe in devotion rich 
And then only the Lord Himself; this was 
The beatitude which he was blessed with.   (495) 

6. He passed Malai Nadu of golden cascades 
And went through orbis terrarum, pursuing 
And strengthening the path of devotion firm; 
He, the peerless one eventually arrived at Tiruvaroor 
Where the Lord who bent the firm-based Mt.Meru into a bow 
And smote the triple cities, is enthroned on the Car 
Whose steeds are the four Vedas, and hailed Him.    (496)

7. He declared Van-tondar to be anathema 
As he coursed into the temple without first 
Hailing the holy devotees of Siva who lustrously thronged 
In the Devasiriyan, rich in grace divine. 
It was thus he was by Siva blessed; 
Eke was he to be blessed by Him still further.         (497) 

8. “Arooran who went straight without hailing 
The holy devotees of Siva who bent 
The sky-high Meru into a  bow, 
And also his ruling Lord who wears the crescent 
On His crest and lakes as His jewels, 
Are both taboo for us.” Thus he declared. 
Yet it is even from them he received grace pure. 
Who can ever like unto him hail devotees thus?  (498) 

9. For the world to thrive, for our own flourishing 
And for the prospering of the goodly ways of Saivism 
Aroorar composed and hymned (before Devasiriyan) 
The Tiru-th-Tonda-th-Tokai; the Lord who was not to be 
Comprehended by the Vedas rich in chhandas 
Declared: “We abide where devotees are.” 
Who can hymn the glory of the Lord who devoured 
Poison which into nectar He transformed?  (499) 

10. Viran Mindar who for many many days 
Served on earth the cause of Saivism, sublime and lofty, 
By the grace of our Lord, fittingly reached the shade 
Of His feet and for ever thrives as a Gana-Natha.   (500)  

11. Why expatiate further? The world is enlightened by 
The Tiru-th-Tonda-th-Tokai and it is to Viran Mindar we owe it. 
Is it given to me to hail him in full? 
We wear on our crown his feet and proceed to 
Narrate the service of the merchant Amar-Niti of Arai.    (501)
