Lord Siva granted darshan to the black sparrow

The temple is praised in Thevaram hymns of saints Gananasambandar, Appar and Sundarar.  This is the 121st Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised by saints.

Sun, Valian, Sage Karanamamunivar, Pandavas, Kochengatcholan and saint Arunagiriar had worshipped Lord in this temple.

Valivalam Valampuri Vinayaka, blessing the devotees coming to the temple is praised in the Thevarm hymn of Saint Sambandar.  The hymn begins with the line “Pidi athan uruvumai kolamigu kariathu”.  As a rule, chanting Thevaram hymns in any Shiva temple should begin with this song only.  The glory of Lord Valivalam Valampuri Vinayaka is great.

This is one of the Mada type temples built by Kochengat Cholan.  Lord Muruga in the temple is praised by saint Arunagiriar in his Tirupugazh hymns.






















A man though noted for his high characters, committed some sins.  As a result, he was born as a Karikuruvi-black sparrow in his next birth.  This small bird had to face the harassment of its big counterparts.  In one such attack, it was bleeding.  It flew and took shelter in the hole of a tree.  A Shivayogi was teaching his disciples under the tree.  The sparrow listened carefully.  The yogi was telling his disciples, “Of all Shiva Sthalas (places) Madurai is great.  Of the sacred springs, Pottramarai in the temple is great.  Of Shiva Murthis, Chokkanatha is great.  There is none to equal Madurai.  Lord Somasundara-Chokkanathar is all merciful granting boons to His devotees.”

The sparrow heard the advice of the Yogi with all attention.  It also gained wisdom and enlightenment and understood the cause of its birth as a sparrow.  The bird few to Madurai and circumambulated the temple and had a dip in the Pottramarai tank in the temple.  It very sincerely prayed to Lord Somasundara for three days continuously.  Pleased Lord called the bird and taught the Mrutyunjaya Mantra.  The bird was further enlightened.  It appealed to Shiva to protect it from the attack of bigger birds as it was too tiny in size and prayed for strength to face such incidents.  Lord said that it would be stronger than all bigger birds.  The sparrow begged the boon for all sparrow species.  It got the name Valian-strong.  Based on this event, the place came to be known as Valivalam.

A hair of this sparrow came to this temple, worshipped Manathunai Nathar and attained salvation. 

Thirumurai 1.50 திருவலிவலம்

1. ஒல்லையாறி யுள்ளமொன்றிக் கள்ளமொழிந் துவெய்ய
சொல்லையாறித் தூய்மைசெய்து காமவினை யகற்றி
நல்லவாறே யுன்றனாமம் நாவில்நவின் றேத்த
வல்லவாறே வந்துநல்காய் வலிவலமே யவனே.

2. இயங்குகின்ற விரவிதிங்கண் மற்றுநற் றேவரெல்லாம்
பயங்களாலே பற்றிநின்பாற் சித்தந்தெளி கின்றிலர்
தயங்குசோதீ சாமவேதா காமனைக்காய்ந் தவனே
மயங்குகின்றேன் வந்துநல்காய் வலிவலமே யவனே.

3. பெண்டிர்மக்கள் சுற்றமென்னும் பேதைப்பெருங் கடலை
விண்டுபண்டே வாழமாட்டேன் வேதனைநோய் நலியக்
கண்டுகண்டே யுன்றனாமங் காதலிக்கின்ற துள்ளம்
வண்டுகிண்டிப் பாடுஞ்சோலை வலிவலமே யவனே.

4. மெய்யராகிப் பொய்யைநீக்கி வேதனையைத் துறந்து
செய்யரானார் சிந்தையானே தேவர்குலக் கொழுந்தே
நைவனாயே னுன்றனாமம் நாளும்நவிற் றுகின்றேன்
வையமுன்னே வந்துநல்காய் வலிவலமே யவனே.

5. துஞ்சும்போதுந் துற்றும்போதுஞ் சொல்லுவனுன் றிறமே
தஞ்சமில்லாத் தேவர்வந்துன் றாளிணைக்கீழ்ப் பணிய
நஞ்சையுண்டாய்க் கென்செய்கேனோ நாளும்நினைந் தடியேன்
வஞ்சமுண்டென் றஞ்சுகின்றேன் வலிவலமே யவனே.

6. புரிசடையாய் புண்ணியனே நண்ணலார்மூ வெயிலும்
எரியவெய்தா யெம்பெருமா னென்றிமையோர் பரவும்
கரியுரியாய் காலகாலா நீலமணி மிடற்று
வரியரவா வந்துநல்காய் வலிவலமே யவனே.

7. தாயும்நீயே தந்தைநீயே சங்கரனே யடியேன்
ஆயும்நின்பா லன்புசெய்வா னாதரிக்கின் றதுள்ளம்
ஆயமாய காயந்தன்னு ளைவர்நின்றொன் றலொட்டார்
மாயமேயென் றஞ்சுகின்றேன் வலிவலமே யவனே.

8. நீரொடுங்குஞ் செஞ்சடையாய் நின்னுடையபொன் மலையை
வேரொடும்பீழ்ந் தேந்தலுற்ற வேந்தனிரா வணனைத்
தேரொடும்போய் வீழ்ந்தலறத் திருவிரலா லடர்த்த
வாரொடுங்குங் கொங்கைபங்கா வலிவலமே யவனே.

9. ஆதியாய நான்முகனும் மாலுமறி வரிய
சோதியானே நீதியில்லேன் சொல்லுவனின் றிறமே
ஓதிநாளு முன்னையேத்து மென்னைவினை யவலம்
வாதியாமே வந்துநல்காய் வலிவலமே யவனே.

10. பொதியிலானே பூவணத்தாய் பொன்றிகழுங் கயிலைப்
பதியிலானே பத்தர்சித்தம் பற்றுவிடா தவனே
விதியிலாதார் வெஞ்சமணர் சாக்கியரென் றிவர்கள்
மதியிலாதா ரென்செய்வாரோ வலிவலமே யவனே.

11. வன்னிகொன்றை மத்தஞ்சூடும் வலிவலமே யவனைப்
பொன்னிநாடன் புகலிவேந்தன் ஞானசம்பந்தன் சொன்ன
பன்னுபாடல் பத்தும்வல்லார் மெய்த்தவத்தோர் விரும்பும்
மன்னுசோதி யீசனோடே மன்னியிருப் பாரே.

Civaṉ who desires Valivalam!
haste having subsided.
concentrating the mind.
leaving deceit.
having stopped speaking cruel words.
purifying the heart.
banishing the acts in connection with love (Kāmam) to praise you uttering often according to my capability in a good manner your names in my tongue.
you appear before me and grant me your grace.

the sun and the moon which are moving and all other celestials.
are not clear in their minds with regard to you as they are seized with fear.
the brilliant light.
one who chants the cāmavētam!
who destroyed Kāmaṉ (cupid)!
I am confused in my mind.
appear before and grant your grace to me.

having separated myself from the ladies, children and relations who are ignorant and as large as the ocean.
I am unable to live since a long time.
knowing very often the painful diseases to afflict me.
my mind desires your names.
Civaṉ who dwells in valivalam where in the gardens bees penetrate into the flowers and hum like music.

Being always people who have knowledge of the ultimate reality, and completely leaving uttering lies.
renouncing pain which one has to suffer on account of desires.
god who dwells in the minds of just and impartial people!
who is the tender leaf in the community of the tēvar.
I who am as mean as a dog will languish.
I am uttering your names daily without ceasing.
you appear before me in the presence of the people of this world and grant me your grace.

when I go to sleep and eat I speak about your qualities only.
as the celestials who had no other refuge came and fell at your feet.
what return can I do to you who consumed the poison (to save their lives)?
I fear that there is deceit, pondering daily, on my part who is your slave.
[[The cause of the fear is due to the fact whether god would accept me or reject me because of my deceitful nature.

Civaṉ who has a tangled caṭai!
the embodiment of all virtues!
you shot an arrow to set fire to all the three forts of the enemies!
you have a skin of an elephant whom the celestials who do not wink praise as our god.
god who destroyed the god of death himself!
god who wears cobras with lines and who has a neck like the sapphire!
appear before me and grant me your grace.

you are the father and also the mother.
god who does good!
your servant`s heart wishes for cherishing with love, you who are investigated by people endowed with knowledge of Civan.
the five senses which are inside the body which is the combination of many things will not allow me to join with you.
I fear that it is deception on my part.

Civaṉ on whose red caṭai the speed of the water is reduced!
Civaṉ who has as a half a lady whose breats are concealed within the bodice, and who pressed with the holy toe, iravanan, the King, who uprotted your beautiful mountain to its foundation, to fall at a great distance with his chariot in the ground, and roar!

the light that could not be seen by Piramaṉ who is the cause for all things and Māl!
I do not possess the right conduct.
I shall be repeating your praise only.
grant me your grace appearing before me so that the grief which is the result of my acts may not distress me who is praising you daily, chanting your names.

Civan who dwells in potiyal!
one who dwells in pūvaṇam.
one who dwells in the shrine of Kayilai where beauty is shining.
one does not leave the attachment towards the minds of the devotees!
the cruel camaṇar and cākkiyar (buddhists) are unlucky people and are without intellect.
what will they do?

on Civan who wears on his head leaves of indian mesquit, konrai and datura flowers and who is in valivalam.
those who are able to recite all the ten songs which are fit for research, and composed by
Nyanacampantan, the chief of pukali, and a native of the country which is made fertile by the river ponni.
will be permanently united with civan who has an undying effulgence and whom the people of sincere penance long for.
