Iyarpagai Nayanar attained mukti in Thiru Sayakkaadu

Saint Tirunavukkarasar and Saint Thiru Nyana Sambanthar had sung the praise of Lord in his Thevaram hymns.  This is the 9th Shiva temple on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Temple: Chaya Vaneswarar

Chola King Kotchengannan built many Shiva temples, majority of them are of Mada style.  Mada temples are the ones in which an elephant cannot enter.  This is also a Mada temple.

Iyarpagai Nayanar, one among the 63 nayanars was born and attained salvation in this place.  His wife was equally a Shiva devotee.  To prove the highest standard of his Bhakti, Lord Shiva came to his house as a devotee and demanded his wife to be presented to him.  Nayanar had no hesitation and offered her instantaneously.  Wife did not object.  Nayanar asked the devotee what he should do next.  The guest devotee said that Nayanar should accompany him with his wife as an escort as the people of the place and his relatives could attack them.  Nayanar agreed and escorted them with a long sword till the border of the place.  Nayanar resisted the opposition of the people and took the guest Shiva devotee safely till the border.  He was asked to return then.  All of a sudden, the devotee disappeared.  Lord Shiva with Mother Uma appeared and said that the play was staged to prove Nayanar’s Shiva Bhakthi, blessed him with all longevity and promised salvation to him.

Lord Muruga in the temple blesses devotees with a bow in hand promising them all protection.  It is said that this Muruga idol was found from the sea.  He is wearing an ankelet-Veerakandara Mani-as powerful as the Vel gifted by Mother Parvathi.  Those facing troubles from enemies worship Muruga in this temple.

Athithi, mother of Indira had a desire to worship Lord Chaya Vaneswarar in this place.  She came to earth for the purpose.  Missing his mother, Indira found her in this place.  To fulfill the wish of his mother, he tried to take the very temple to his place pulled by his elephant Iravadam.  While the elephant began to pull the temple, Ambica expressed a sound that was sweeter than a nightingale.  She came to be known as Kuyilinum Inia Mozhiyal.  Lord appeared before Indira and advised him to drop his idea and be benefitted by his worship in this place itself.

1.  நித்த லுந்நிய மஞ்செய்து நீர்மலர் தூவிச்
சித்த மொன்றவல் லார்க்கரு ளுஞ்சிவன் கோயில்
மத்த யானையின் கோடும்வண் பீலியும் வாரித்
தத்துநீர்ப் பொன்னி சாகர மேவுசாய்க் காடே.

2. பண்ட லைக்கொண்டு பூதங்கள் பாடநின் றாடும்
வெண்ட லைக்கருங் காடுறை வேதியன் கோயில்
கொண்ட லைத்திகழ் பேரிமு ழங்கக் குலாவித்
தண்ட லைத்தட மாமயி லாடுசாய்க் காடே.

3. நாறு கூவிள நாகிள வெண்மதி யத்தோ
டாறு சூடு மமரர் பிரானுறை கோயில்
ஊறு தேங்கனி மாங்கனி யோங்கிய சோலைத்
தாறு தண்கத லிப்புதன் மேவுசாய்க் காடே.

4. வரங்கள் வண்புகழ் மன்னிய வெந்தை மருவார்
புரங்கள் மூன்றும் பொடிபட வெய்தவன் கோயில்
இரங்க லோசையு மீட்டிய சரக்கொடு மீண்டித்
தரங்க நீள்கழித் தண்கரை வைகுசாய்க் காடே.

5. ஏழை மார்கடை தோறு மிடுபலிக் கென்று
கூழை வாளர வாட்டும் பிரானுறை கோயில்
மாழை யொண்கண் வளைக்கை நுளைச்சியர் வண்பூந்
தாழை வெண்மடற் கொய்துகொண் டாடுசாய்க் காடே.

6. துங்க வானவர் சூழ்கடல் தாங்கடை போதில்
அங்கொர் நீழ லளித்தவெம் மானுறை கோயில்
வங்க மங்கொளி ரிப்பியு முத்து மணியுஞ்
சங்கும் வாரித் தடங்கட லுந்துசாய்க் காடே.

7. வேத நாவினர் வெண்பளிங் கின்குழைக் காதர்
ஓத நஞ்சணி கண்ட ருகந்துறை கோயில்
மாதர் வண்டுதன் காதல்வண் டாடிய புன்னைத்
தாது கண்டு பொழின்மறைந் தூடுசாய்க் காடே.

8. இருக்கு நீள்வரை பற்றி யடர்த்தன் றெடுத்த
அரக்கன் ஆகம் நெரித்தருள் செய்தவன் கோயில்
மருக்கு லாவிய மல்லிகை சண்பகம் வண்பூந்
தருக்கு லாவிய தண்பொழி னீடுசாய்க் காடே.

9. மாலி னோடயன் காண்டற் கரியவர் வாய்ந்த
வேலை யார்விட முண்டவர் மேவிய கோயில்
சேலி னேர்விழி யார்மயி லாலச் செருந்தி
காலை யேகன கம்மலர் கின்றசாய்க் காடே.

10. ஊத்தை வாய்ச்சமண் கையர்கள் சாக்கியர்க் கென்றும்
ஆத்த மாக வறிவரி தாயவன் கோயில்
வாய்த்த மாளிகை சூழ்தரு வண்புகார் மாடே
பூத்த வாவிகள் சூழ்ந்து பொலிந்தசாய்க் காடே.

11. ஏனை யோர்புகழ்ந் தேத்திய வெந்தைசாய்க் காட்டை
ஞான சம்பந்தன் காழியர் கோனவில் பத்தும்
ஊன மின்றி யுரைசெய வல்லவர் தாம்போய்
வான நாடினி தாள்வரிம் மானிலத் தோரே.

Having performed the daily routine of duties.
Having strewn flowers for worship and poured water for bathing.
the temple of Civaṉ who will bestow his grace on those who can concentrate their minds on him.
carrying off in large quantity the tusks of elephants having must, and good feathers of peacock.
is Cāykkātu where Poṉṉi (river Kaviri) of leaping waves joins the sea.

the temple of the god who is considered as a brahmin among gods, and who resides in the black cremation ground of white skulls, and dances when the pūtams sing with tunes the prominent kettle drum roars like the wind blowing from the East shining with their feathers.
is Cāykkātu where the big peacocks dance in the high place of gardens

the temple where the chief of the immortals who wears on his head the river (Kaṅkai), fragrant leaves of bael tree and very young white crescent.
is Cāykkātu where in the gardens tasteful coconuts, mango fruits are abundant, the cool thicket of plantain with clusters of bunches of fruits are found.

our father who has a permanent fame due to granting bow to devotees.
the temple of the Lord who discharged an arrow to reduce to ashes all the three cities of enemies.
the sound of ladies bemoaning their lover`s absence.
is cāykkātu where the waves gathering together with the articles of merchandise collected by them stay in the cool bank of the long back-water

the temple of the Lord who cause the short and shining cobra to dance in order to get alms which he can get at the gates of the houses of ladies, resides.
fisher-women wearing on their hands bangles and having eyes as bright as gold is cāykkāṭu where (they) fondle having plucked, the flower of the beautiful and thriving fragrant screw-pine of white petals.
[[This is a description of the maritime tract, as cāykkāṭu is very near the sea-coast.

the temple where our Lord who bestowed the shade of his grace when the eminent residents of the heaven chumed the surrounding ocean (of milk).
is cāykkāṭu where the big sea carries off the ships, and shining oysters, pearls, other precious stones and conches, and pushes them towards the shore.

the Lord who chants the vētam.
one who wears the ear-rings made of white marble.
the temple where the Lord with a neck made beautiful by the poison that rose in the ocean, gladly resides.
the lovable female bee.
Cāykkāṭu where on seeing its loving male bee which has rolled in the pollen of the mast-wood tree, it is sulky, hiding itself in the garden.

the temple of the Lord who crushed the body of the arakkaṉ who, in the distant past, attacked and held up the long mountain on which the Lord is seated, and then bestowed his grace on him.
is cāykkāṭu where jasmine which is conspicuous by its fragrance, champak (canpakam) and many trees of fertile flowers, are conspicuous, in the long cool garden.

the Lord who cannot be seen by Māl and Ayaṉ.
the temple where the Lord who drank the poison that rose in the excellent ocean.
the peacocks to dance like the ladies who have eyes comparable to cēl (a kind of fish).
is Cāykkāṭu where Cerunti (panicled pear tree) puts forth flowers like gold in the morning.
[[The flowers of Cerunti are compared to gold;
]] [[this simile is found in many places in Tēvāram itself;

the temple of the Lord who cannot be truly understood by the despicable camaṉ who have filth accumulated in their teeth, and Cākkiyar (Buddhists) near the fertile pukār which is surrounded by wealthy mansions.
is Cāykkātu which is brilliant by being surrounded by tanks of blossomed flowers

on Cāykkāṭu of my father which has been praised and extolled by others.
the ten verses composed by Nyaṉacampantaṉ, the chief of the people of kāḻi.
people of this world who are able to recite them without any mistakes.
after ascending into heaven they will rule over it with pleasure.
