Lord blessed a deer in this place

The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Tirugnanasambandar and in Tirupugazh hymns of Arunagiriar.   This is the 58th Lord Shiva shrine on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

This is one of the Pancha (five) Shiva Temples in Tiruchi region.  Bhagwan Sri Adi Sankara had worshipped Lord here, so also Sage Mrigandu.  Shri Sankara is facing south in the goshta-wall around the sanctum.  Saint Sambandar had sung a pathigam-10 verses in praise of the Lord of this temple while saint Arunagiriar had praised his favourite Lord Muruga in his Tirupugazh.  Mother Durga on the goshta is all cool and smiling with demon Mahishasura absent under Her feet.   Lord Muruga graces from a separate shrine with His consorts Valli and Deivanai.

The name Mandurai has its origin as the region was dense with Mango trees and also as Lord blessed a Maan – deer in this place.

Samukya Devi, daughter of divine sculptor Vishwakarma was married to Sun God.  She had a happy marital life with Sun.  As days rolled, she could not bear the heat of her husband.  She asked her husband to reduce his temperature but he did not help her.  Samukya Devi came to the conclusion that she could no more bear the heat and told her father her intention to come to him.  As a father, he quoted scriptures and asked the daughter to be patient.  As she could no longer live with Sun, as a devout wife to take care of husband’s needs, Samukyadevi created a maid, an accurate replica of her, and made her to live with Sun taking care of him.  She was Chayadevi (shadow image).  Samukyadevi did not return to Sun despite her father’s advice and was unwillingly staying with him.  She took the form of a horse, came to this place, performed penance on Lord Shiva to bring down the heat of Sun so that she could return to him.  Sun too found some difference in the attitude of Chayadevi and came to know from Vishwakarma that Samukhyadevi had left him.  He immediately reduced his heat, came to this place, worshipped Lord Shiva and returned with Samukhyadevi.  Representing this event, planet Sun appears in the Navagraha shrine with both Davis – Samukhya and Chaya.  Sun is alone too nearby.  Other planets are facing Sun.  There is also a story attached to the temple that Lord Shiva graced two deers – a demon couple in earlier birth and also a Maharshi on a Chaturdi day (4th day of new moon or full moon day) coinciding with Tuesday – called Ahankara Chatuthi.  Special pujas are performed to Lord on such Chaturti days.  It is said that the benefit of worshipping the Lord this day would relieve devotees from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly and bless them with prosperity.

A maharshi committed a wrong to Lord Shiva and was cursed to be born as a deer in this place that was dense with Mango trees.  The Rishi-deer was born to other deers – demons in earlier birth.  They left the baby-deer for preying.  Lord Shiva with Mother Parvathi came there in the guise of a hunter, shot them and released them from their curses.  They came to the baby deer waiting for its parents.  Mother Parvathi fed the hungry baby deer, the Rishi in earlier birth.  Lord Shiva consoled it and released from the curse.  As requested by the Rishi, they stayed here.

அளக வாணுதல் அரிவைதன் பங்கனை யன்றிமற் றறியோமே.

அன்றி யுள்ளழிந் தெழும்பரி சழகிது அதுவவர்க் கிடமாமே.

சிரபு ரம்பதி யுடையவன் கவுணியன் செழுமறை நிறைநாவன்
அரவெ னும்பணி வல்லவன் ஞானசம் பந்தன்அன் புறுமாலை
பரவி டுந்தொழில் வல்லவர் அல்லலும் பாவமும் இலர்தாமே.

pushing the flowers of wild-lime trees, long-leaved two-sepalled gamboge, common delight of the woods, sandal-wood, tusks of elephants, champak flowers, panicled golden-blossomed pear-tree, fetid cassia, and east-indian kino-tree which has flowers like gold.
our master who dwells in Māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which brings with it gold.
we shall praise the feet wearing armour of gold which are worshipped with joined hands by the celestials who do not wink.

pushing in a row the pearls from bamboos, fruits of nutmeg tree, honeycombs and wood-apple trees.
Civaṉ who dwells in Māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri in whose floods all the above things come mingled.
Civaṉ who opened his frontal eye to burn Kāmaṉ who has five arrows and who is the son of that Māl who adorns himself with the leaves of the sacred basil.
we know of no other god except Civaṉ who has as his half a lady with a bright forehead with a few tresses of hair at the top.

Civaṉ who dwells in Māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri whose water runs rapidly scooping the clusters of the fruits of south indian talipot palm and areca-palms growing in hills on which the peaks pour forth honey.
receives alms in the skull of Piramaṉ who has deceased.
we do not practise any other thing except worshipping the gem without destruction whom the residents of heaven praise with joy.

the warrior who dwells in māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which brings floods in which red-flowered silk cotton trees, fetid cassia, date palms, long leaved two sepelled camboge, young flowering murdah, and cloves are mingled.
we do not know to do obeisance to any other god except the tender leaf in the creaper of the celestials, and the mountain which placed along with the cobra datura flowers, a crescent and flowing water which has waves.

to Civaṉ who dwells in māṅtuṟai on the northern bank of the Kaviri which brings great floods pushing the flowers of common caung, champak, wild lime tree, yellow fragrant trumpet-flowered trees and bottle-flowers.
those who worship combining flowers, food offerings songs of praises, lamps and burning incense according to rules enjoined in ākamams.
are people who have performed penance and are really persons who always utter with their tongues the names of that Civaṉ.

pushing sandal-wood trees of increasing fragrance black eagle-wood tree, peacock`s feathers and other big trees to stand erect.
and coming dashing against the banks.
our pure Lord, who dwells in māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri.
staying with piety.
when the sun and the moon and Kings of this world pay respects to, and praise, Civaṉ.
we shall adore the lotus feet of Civaṉ which is worshipped by a group of celestials by name marut`

the god who dwells is māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which washes on the bank in abundance, scooping the flowers, blossomed in the early morning, of jasmine having honey arabian-jasmine and wild jasmine.
the brahmin who trampled under his foot the god of death who perform his duty without fear on favour in the distant past at the same place (where mārkaṅṭēyaṉ was worshipping Civaṉ) we shall adore the feet of Civaṉ which wear in a row armours for the feet;
who shot an arrow with great effort on the forts with a mountain converted into a bow bending it into a semi-circle.

when the female monkeys eat the mango-fruits in the gardens where the southern balmy breeze stays.
disregarding Civaṉ who dwells in māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which brings floods pushing rubies.
who crushed with his toe the strong arakkaṉ (Irāvaṇaṉ) who lifted the mountain and roared.
those who do not think of him in their minds reach hell as their stage of existence.

the two feet resembling lotus, of Civaṉ who dwells in māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which flows with a roaring sound and pushing flowers in rows, mass of pearls and sapphire in an arranged order, which could not be found even after search by Māl and nāṉmukaṉ (Piramaṉ) sing their praises, and dance by praising their beauty daily (People of this world!) the god of death will not afflict you.

camaṇar who eat their food standing and tēvar (buddhists) have no fired principles.
taking in a sweep foams and Kans (a coarse grass), plantain fruits, big mango-fruits, fragrant cardamoms and tall bamboos.
the nature of the heart melting always thinking a māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri in which the above mentioned produces come straight combing together, is beautiful.
that ecstatic state of mind is their place.

on Civaṉ who dwells in Māntuṟai on the northern bank of the Kāviri which robs the products of the mountain.
the garland of verses composed with devotion by Nyāṉacampantaṉ, whose tongue is fully conversant with excellent Vētams, born in Kavuṇiya Kōttiram, and who has as his native place Civapuram and who is capable of uttering the name `Ara` those who are capable of praising (with the aid of those verses) have no sufferings and sins.
