Sakthi Maha Meru vertical form of Sri Chakra



Lord Shiva of this temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of all three celebrated Saivite Saints, Tirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar.   This is the 4th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Maharshis Markandeya, Upamany, Karan and Saint Arunagiri Nathar had worshipped in this temple.

The idol of Mother Jeshtadevi appears different in this temple.  There is a misconception that Jeshtadevi, usually said to be the elder sister of Sri Mahalakshmi is considered an inauspicious Goddess causing poverty and no endeavour would be successful if She comes on our way.  But She protects all from all hardships and dangers.  She makes people always awake.  She was the family deity of Pallava king Nandi Varman. 

Those who worship Sakthi with Meru Mount – vertical form of Sri Chakra, use to perform the pujas with nine mounts, called Navabaranas-9 jewels.  Mother Jeshtadevi is the second Meru-Jewel.  There is a place of for Jeshtadevi in Mother Akhilandeswari Temple in Tiruvanaikaval.  She has her place in this Uyyakondon Tirumalai temple also.  Mother Jeshtadevi in this temple is holding two children in Her hands, one appearing as Nandi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva.  This child is called Madan as it looks like a Madu-bull.  The other is a beautiful girl baby called Chedi, the maid of Mother Shakti and also the deity of words.  Mother Adi Parasakthi is in the form of Mother Jeshtadevi who has brought the Chedi the deity of words – Vak Devatha.  Devotees may protect themselves from accidents in life by worshipping Mother Jeshtadevi.

The temple is on a 50 feet tall hill.  There are five sacred springs around the temple – Ponnoli Odai, Kudamurutti, Gnanavavi, Enkonakinaru and Narkonakinaru.  Mother graces in the temple with Gajal around Her eyes named Anjanakshi.  Other Ambica in the temple is praised as Balambika.  Pujas are performed to both separately.  As Lord Shiva gave a re-birth to Markandeya Rishi, He is revered as Ujjevanathar.  As He grants all the wishes of the devotees, He is praised as Karpaganathar.  Lord is a swyambu.

The temple is aesthetically constructed on this 50 feet tall hill.  Karan, one of the brothers of Ravana had worshipped the Lord Shiva in this temple.  There are 3 entrances to the temple, two facing south and one east.

Sage Mrukandu prayed to Lord Shiva seeking child boon.  Lord asked him what type of son he would like to have – a fool, a handicapped with a longevity of 100 years or the one known for his wisdom and handsomeness but with a short life of just 16 years.  The sage chose the latter.  The boy was born and named Markandeya.  The time came.  Markandeya was chased by the Lord of Death Yama when he was 16.  Lord Shiva protected the young boy in the Uyyakondon Hill and granted him ‘Chiranjeevi’ – deathless life – at Tiruverkadu.

அலையார் தண்புனல்சூழ்ந் தழ

விலையார் மாலைவல்லார் வியன்
மூவுல காள்பவரே.

Civaṉ who has a banner on which a bull is drawn!
who has adorned yourself with koṉṟai flowers full of fragrance.
who has a white battle-axe as a weapon!
who is the pre-eminent supreme god!
my Lord, my god who is permanently dwelling in Tirukkaṟkuti which is surrounded by gardens of abundant fragrance!
comfort me who is very low, by saying Do not fear

the supreme god to whom brahmins and celestials pay obeisance, pray and whom they worship with joined hands!
my chief who is the sweet nectar to me!
abode of all virtues who permanently dwells in tirukkaṟkuṭi surrounded by gardens full of darkness!
one who has beautiful eyes!
The beauty for the eyes is looking compassionately in devotees see 1st verse.

one who destroyed the three cities to be reduced to ashes by a bow!
the rare medicine which is on the top of the hill!
one who had a young lady on the left side!
one who holds a deer in his hand!
one who has a red caṭai on which there is water of Kaṅkai, and who dwells in permanently in tirukkuṟkuṭi.

Civaṉ who has a body of red colour!
who has a beautiful blue neck!
who has on one half a lady whose eyes are coated with eye-salve!
who flayed a frienzied elephant!
who holds a trident in the hand!
my father who dwells permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi!
my Lord!

Civaṉ who wears beautiful men`s ear-ring made of conch who wears a cloth which is passed between the legs and tucked at the back and which is loose.
who has on one half a lady who holds in her fingers a ball to play with!
my Lord and my father who dwells permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi which has gardens of profuse fragrance please accept also me, your servant.

having tied a cobra, a loin cloth and a piece of cloth used as a waist-band.
you who have a shining crescent on your head along with koṉṟai flowers of abundant fragrance.
My Lord, the king who dwells permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi surrounded by fields which have ridges.

Civaṉ who has a famous visible form, and who is praised in the 3rd person, paid obeisance and praised in the 2nd person by the people of this world and the celestials who has a shining blue neck.
the sweet ambrosia that does not satiste and dwells permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi surrounded by flowers-gardens on which clouds settle.

Civaṉ who is the great objects of earth, water, air, fire and extensive sky All the five elements are enumerated who assumed the form of fire which was praised by both Ayaṉ in the lotus flower, and Māl!
who is like the divine Kaṟpakam tree!
who holds fire in the hand and dwells permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi.

noble-minded god who separated the life of kālaṉ to perish in order to protect the great young boy, by your holy and soft toe!
our Lord!
You who desires to dwell permanently in tirukkaṟkuṭi which is surrounded by sugar-cane fields.
see 1st verse.

on the god who in like the Kaṟpakam tree in tirukkaṟkuṭi where great sages who possess knowledge of arts gather together and where festivals are celebrated, and which is beautiful by being surrounded by cool water with waves.
those who are able to recite the garland of verses of high value which are the words of the father of ciṅkaṭi of good nature who has a bright forehead like the bow, will rule over the three worlds, there is no doubt about that.
