Parama Bhagavan Parameshwaran


Praised in the Thevaram hymns of Tirunavukkarasar and Gnanasambandar My Lord on His bull is coming Chanting the Vedas, wearing the sacred thread And the tiger skin, he removes sins of both Believers and non-believers, He is in Pazhana Nagar -- Tirunavukkarasar This is the 50th temple on the northern bank of Cauvery.

Lord Shiva graces in the temple as a swayambumurthy. Rays of moon fall on the Lord on Poornima days (full moon) and also before after two days in the month of Panguni (March-April) and Purattasi (September-October).

The main tower is too ancient in three tier model. There is no flag post in the temple. It has a Balipeeta and Nandhi. There are shrines for Lord Vinayaka and Muruga. The vahanas (the vehicle idols of Gods) are stored in the right of the front hall. After worshipping Vinayaka and proceeding further on the left, there are shrines of Sapthamadhas (seven virgins), Vinayaka, Venugopala and Shivalingas in different names, Nataraja Sabha, Bhairava and Navagrahas the nine planets.

The place is known as Kathalivanam meaning place of plantain trees. Moon worshipped here. Kubera the authority for wealth, Lord Vishnu, Mahalakshmi and a Brahmin named Darmasharma worshipped here.

This is the second of the Sapthasthana sthalams – holy places.

The place is named Tirupazhanam for its green environment and fertile fields. Once, a young Brahmin boy, chased by the God of Death, Yama ran in panic and surrendered at the feet of Lord Shiva in the temple. The Lord appeared before him and saved him from the clutches of death. As the Lord saved the boy from the danger of death, He is praised as Abath Sahayeswarar – (Abathu-danger, Sahayam-help).

பாதந்தொழுவார் பாவந்தீர்ப்பார் பழன நகராரே.

கண்மேற்கண்ணுஞ் சடைமேற்பிறையு முடையார் காலனைப்
புண்ணாறுதிர மெதிராறோடப் பொன்றப் புறந்தாளால்
எண்ணாதுதைத்த வெந்தைபெருமா னிமவான் மகளோடும்
பண்ணார்களிவண் டறைபூஞ்சோலைப் பழன நகராரே.

பிறையும்புனலுஞ் சடைமேலுடையார் பறைபோல் விழிகட்பேய்

நலமஞ்சுடைய நறுமாங்கனிகள் குதிகொண் டெதிருந்திப்
பலவின்கனிக டிரைமுன்சேர்க்கும் பழன நகராரே.

வீளைக்குரலும் விளிச்சங்கொலியும் விழவின் னொலியோவா
மூளைத்தலைகொண் டடியாரேத்தப் பொடியா மதிளெய்தார்
ஈளைப்படுகி லிலையார்தெங்கிற் குலையார் வாழையின்
பாளைக்கமுகின் பழம்வீழ்சோலைப் பழன நகராரே.

பொய்யாமொழியார் முறையாலேத்திப் புகழ்வார் திருமேனி
செய்யார்கரிய மிடற்றார்வெண்ணூல் சேர்ந்த வகலத்தார்
கையாடலினார் புனலான்மல்கு சடைமேற் பிறையோடும்
பையாடரவ முடனேவைத்தார் பழன நகராரே.

மஞ்சோங்குயர முடையான்மலையை மாறா யெடுத்தான்றோள்
அஞ்சோடஞ்சு மாறுநான்கு மடர வூன்றினார்
நஞ்சார்சுடலைப் பொடிநீறணிந்த நம்பான் வம்பாரும்
பைந்தாமரைகள் கழனிசூழ்ந்த பழன நகராரே.

கடியார்கொன்றைச் சுரும்பின்மாலை கமழ்புன் சடையார்விண்
முடியாப்படிமூ வடியாலுலக முழுதுந் தாவிய
நெடியானீடா மரைமேலயனு நேடிக் காணாத
படியார்பொடியா டகலமுடையார் பழன நகராரே.

கண்டான்கழுவா முன்னேயோடிக் கலவைக் கஞ்சியை
உண்டாங்கவர்க ளுரைக்குஞ்சிறுசொல் லோரார் பாராட்ட
வண்டாமரையின் மலர்மேனறவ மதுவாய் மிகவுண்டு
பண்டான்கெழும வண்டியாழ்செய்யும் பழன நகராரே.

வேய்முத்தோங்கி விரைமுன்பரக்கும் வேணுபுரந் தன்னுள்
நாவுய்த்தனைய திறலான்மிக்க ஞான சம்பந்தன்
பேசற்கினிய பாடல்பயிலும் பெருமான் பழனத்தை
வாயிற்பொலிந்த மாலைபத்தும் வல்லார் நல்லாரே.

wearing the white sacred thread.
and mounting a white bull.
will come with pomp surrounded by pūtam-s
wears a skin flayed from the tiger.
uttering continuously the names, chief, naked one, and one in whom people can repose confidence.
Civaṉ in the city of paḻaṉam will do away with the sins of those who worship his feet.

Civaṉ has a frontal eye above the eyes in the face and has a crescent on his caṭai.
our father, civan who kicked with his upper part of his foot without minding as a worthy object to make Kāḻaṉ to die completely for the blood with the offensive smell of the wound to run like a river.
is in the city of palaṉam which has beautiful gardens where intoxicated bees hum like tunes, with the daughter of the himālaya mountain.

Civaṉ has a crescent and water on his caṭai.
has as his place the cremation ground where the pēy which has open eyes as big as a drum dwells.
the chief of the people of this world.
is in the city of palaṉam where devotees praise him with flowers in which bees hum, dance and sing, during which the beating of drums, the blowing of conches and offering of food never ceases.

in the cremation ground where the shaggy rock-horned own which lives in the high strong branch, hoots.
dancing at night when the pūtams are singing.
the great one who received honey (toddy) in the skull of the ancient Piramaṉ who is seated in the beautiful (lotus) flower.
the supreme god who admits us as his protege.
one who has the six attributes.
one who has the appellation of parameshwaran.
is in the city of paḻaṉam.

the god who burnt the three forts with a superior and cruel bow, and has a bull that is capable of killing.
paḻaṉam where peacocks with long tails and indian cuckcooks are found in abundance.
The Kāviri which is like the sea.
is in the city of paḻaṉam where the waves pushes in the opposite direction jack-fruits and mango-fruits of good taste, beauty and fragrance jump in the floods, and wash them on the banks.

whistling sound.
the sound of the conch calling devotees.
and the bustle of never-ceasing festivals
holding a skull which had a brain in it (this is the action of Civaṉ)
shot an arrow on the forts to reduce them to dust, to be praised by the devotees.
is in the city of paḻaṉam where from the cocoanut trees having leaves, plaintain trees having cluster of fruits, and ripe fruits of the areca-palm with spathes, which are growing in the groves, fall on the banks where mire has not dried up.

Civaṉ is praised by devotees who never utter falsehood, by turns
has a holy body which is red.
has a black neck.
has on his chest a white sacred thread.
dances indicating with his hand freedom from fear
the god in the city of paḻaṉam placed on his caṭai which is full of water a dancing cobra with a hood, together with a crescent

Civaṉ who pressed down with his toe to kill all the twenty shoulders of the one who was as tall as to touch the cloud, and who lifted the mountain out of enmity.
Civaṉ who drank the poison and besmeared himself with the powder of holy ash.
is in the city of paḻaṉam surrounded by rice-fields and fertile lotus flowers full of fragrance.

Civaṉ has a golden caṭai in which the bright garlands of koṉṟai which has bees on them spread their fragrance.
who has a body which could not be found by Ayaṉ who is seated on a long lotus and tall Māl who completely measured as three feet the world which has the sky as its cover.
and who has besmeared his chest with holy ash, is in the city of Paḻaṉam.

running even before cleaning their eyes
to be praised by devotees who do not regard the words of contempt spoken by those who drink the gruel mixed with other food-stuffs.
having drunk the honey in the fertile lotus in a large measure by its suckers.
is the city of Paḻaṉam where the bees hum like the melodies played on the lute.

in vēṇupuram where the pearls that are produced in bamboos abundantly spread their fragrance.
ñāṉacampantaṉ who is such a great person to direct people by the power of his words, to salvation.
about paḻaṉam where people practise songs which are sweet to be spoken highly.
those who are capable of reciting ten verses which are like garlands and which are eminent by the truths they contain, are good people.
