Uthirakosamangai Arase
This is the only temple where an Emerald Nataraja idol is available for darshan of the devotees. Also this is the only temple where the fragrant flower Thazhamboo is permitted for worship whereas the flower is forbidden for use in worship in other Shiva temples as this flower gave false evidence in favour of Brhamma as if he found the head of Lord Shiva. Brahmma also got relieved from the curse by worshipping the Lord from this temple. The Lord is a swayambumurthi appearing from the Ilandha tree which still exists in the temple.
The antiquity of Sri Mangalanathar-Mangaleswari temple dates far back. Mandodhari (wife of Ravana) was very adamant that she would marry only a Shiva devotee and did not mind waiting for the choice. She prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, asked the sages in the Ashrams to take care of one of the Veda Script (Agamas) as He was going to grace Mandodhar and told them that He would take back from them then on His turning back. The Lord appeared before Mandodhari as a child. Ravana who came there touched the child knowing It was Lord Shiva. Lord tested Ravana by changing Himself as fire. All the places in the world were caught in the fire. The sages, unable to protect the book given by the Lord fell in the fire tank nearby (Agni theertham) and died.
But sage Manickavasagar courageously withstood the fire and saved the scripture. The Lord graced Mandodhari’s wish and helped her wedding with Ravana. The Lord graced Manickavasagar granting His Linga form. The sage is still in the temple in the Linga form. The Lord is a Swayambu Linga appearing from the Ilandha tree. This is the only temple having a Nataraja idol made of Emerald.
The Ilandha tree dated more than 3000 years old.

O Rider of the Bull,
in mercy You had union with me – The lowest –,
and ruled me.
Will You let go Your hold on me?
O Lord-Owner whose clothing is The skin of a valiant tiger !
O Monarch Of aeviternal Uttharakosamangkai !
O One Of matted hair !
I stand enervated.
O my Lord-God,
raise and support me.
True,
I forsake not damsels whose lips are ruddy like The Kovvai-fruit and whose breasts are bewitchingly Close-set;
yet will You abandon me?
I am within The circle of Your lofty servitorship;
I stand not without.
O Monarch of Uttharakosamangkai,
though I –The deceitful one –,
have given You the slip,
Yet what may the reason be,
for Your tracing me And making me Your subject?
O Lord abiding at radiant.
Tiruvaaroor !
O sempiternal Sovereign of Uttharakosamangkai !
O One who is concorporate with Her of jewelled breasts Covered by a breast-band !
O One who fosters me !
I am like a tree rooted in the bank of the river – The pentad of senses whence flow the carnal joys Of dark-eyed dames;
yet will You forsake me?
O Uttharakosamangkai`s King in whose lofty crown glistering Glows the shoot – a white crescent !
O Salvific Lustre Like unto lucid,
auric and fulgurant light !
Lo,
I slipped from Your mercifully fostering hand,
and parted,
Shine tinsel-like;
yet,
will You forsake me?

He for ever wears on his crown the feet of the Dancer
Who dances in the Ambalam roofed of gold;
He is stablished in the lofty excellence
Of servitude to the Lord-God;
As a result of the askesis of the ancient clan of Sudras
He came to be born to illumine this world;
He is Maranar of Ilayankudi.
Whenever devotees visited him-- whoever they be --,
He would, rooted in devotion, humbly receive them
And would address them kindly with loving words;
The sole reason which impelled him to revere them was,
That they were the servitors of the Lord who wears
Bones as ornaments and skulls as garland.
He would receive them into his house and wash
Their feet in ritual love;
He would have them duly seated, and adore them;
Then to please those devotees of the Lord of gods
He would treat them to fourfold victuals
Rich in sextuple taste.
As a result of the participation of the devotees
Of Siva -- the Lord of all entia --, in the virtuous feasting
Offered by him daily to their great delight,
His wealth, immovable and movable, extended
And increased, and he was like the Lord of Alakapuri,
The companion of the eight-shouldered Lord.
To reveal to the world that he would behave thus
Not only during his days of plenty but also
During times when he is steeped in miserable penury
The Lord-God of Tillai thought fit to cause
The daily diminution of his wealth
Resulting in abject poverty.
His wealth wilted; but the mind of our deity
--Maran, the Lord of Ilayankudi --, did not wilt;
By barter, pledge and mortgage he came by
The wherewithal to do as before his service divine
To the devotees, in which he grew mellow.
While thus flourished his service, the Lord
Unknown to Vishnu -- the triumphant Boar,
And Brahma -- the Swan, stepped down on earth
To bless it, in the guise of a great tapaswi
Unaccompanied by His Consort, and His mount, the Bull.
On a night when it rained Maranar remained
Behind latched doors wallowing in soaring hunger
With nothing to relieve him.
It was thus, even thus, he welcomed his guest.
He dried His dripping person and then
Offered to Him duly a seat;
He desired to feed his guest;
He addressed his wife thus: “Great is the hunger
Of this tapaswi; what shall we do?
“Even though we have no food for ourselves
We must yet fittingly feed him who is a devotee
Of the Lord whose Consort is the daughter of Himavant.
In what way do we, this achieve?” Thus he.
His wife replied him thus: “I see no other way.
There are none to give us aught;
It’s late in the night; there’s no other place to go;
What is there for this sinner to do?” Thus she.
And she added: “If you can gather back the seeds
Of paddy that this day were sown in the fields,
It’ll be possible for me to provide food;
We can thus rid our misery; I see no other way.”
When he heard these words of his wife, he felt delighted
As if he got back all his former wealth;
He willingly agreed to the course suggested
And prepared himself to visit the watery fields.
The rain it rained fierce and violent;
It was blindening to boot hiding all the sides;
It looked as though the dark inky midnight
Dissolving in black torrents poured on earth.
Men would shudder even to think of it;
Such was it, the dead of night
, Verily a sheet of inky wash
Well-nigh impossible to brave.
Enthused by impelling love, with a big basket
Held inverted on his head, through via trita,
Fared forth Ilayankudi Maranar, the princely patron,
To the fields where slumbered water-fowls.
He went his way feeling the ground with his feet;
With his hands he gathered the germinating seeds
Which lay floating, into his basket, and filled it,
And hastened home with the basket on his head.
His wife that awaited him at the threshold
Received it, and in love washed the mire away
From the seeds; then she spake to him thus:
“To cook the grain there’s fuel none for the oven.”
Then the great one pulled down the rafters of his roof
That covered the house. O the house eternal!
With splintered rafter as fuel, she lit the oven
And fried the moist germinating grain into rice
Which she poured into a vessel and cooked.
This done the paragon of excelling chastity
Humbly addressed her husband thus:
“What shall we do for curry?”
He thought: “The great devotee must have suffered much
By reason of his fatiguing journey and cruel hunger.”
Driven by love, he hastened to the backyard
And plied his feeling hands and gathered the greens
Which have grown a little in the small germinating pits;
It looked as though he plucked out Pasam by its root.
The wife received the greens from the husband,
Sifted them clean and washed them well;
She put them in spotless vessels and with wonted skill
Prepared many a dish; old memories assailed her;
She consoled herself with the thought
That she could do that much at least.
She then addressed her husband and showed him
The dishes of curry and said: “Let us at once
Serve the peerless one with food.” He neared Him
Who is not to be comprehended by any one,
And gently woke Him up from His slumber.
He beseeched Him thus: “O great one that hath
Deigned to redeem humble me sunk in misery!
Be pleased to partake of the repast.”
When the servitor spake thus, He rose up
And blazed as pure flame; the devotee
And his divine wife stood wonder-struck.
Before the devotees who stood transfixed in awe
When the Lord unknown to Vishnu and Brahma
Blazed forth as flame, Sankara with His Consort
Of perfumed locks rejoicingly manifested
On His mount, the Bull; addressing the great devotee
Who performed the Maheswara Pooja, He said:
“Dear one, you have (all through your life)
Performed Maheswara Pooja; with your wife
Abide in My world; with Kubhera himself
To carry out your mandates with all his wealth
At your disposal, be in bliss immersed.”
The one far far superior to all, blessed him thus.

O Siva! You are the five elements! You have me as your permanent slave. You hid yourself inside as the source of all joy. You are the eternal sound! You are the power in the five elements. You are the four vedas and the six angas. You pervade everywhere as the wind. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You dance with the ghosts. You destroy the cycle of births. It is your play that make the Jeevas take various births. You came and entered in my heart. You destroyed the three forts of the deceitful asuras. You never leave my heart. You wear a snake as your waist-belt. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You destroyed the three forts of the enemies. You came into my heart. You created me in this form. You took my soul and kept it away from going awry. You are eternal wealth. You are praised by the world. You are the rain cloud that sustains everything. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You are the nectar praised by the Devas. You came and entered my heart. You are the divine form that removes the blemishes/deficiencies. You rose as an infinite column of fire. You are the distilled honey. You are the Lord of all devas. You dance among the fires in the cremation grounds. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You are the world with many towns. You stood as an infinite column of fire. You pervade everywhere. You entered my heart and remain there permanently. You are the coolness of the pond. You are peerless. You are the rain cloud that sustains everything. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You are the several forms that becomes the one and only form. You are not knowable even to the devas. You bestowed life even to the grass. You entered my heart and remain there permanently. You are manifest as the many beings in various worlds. You never forsake the world. Your are the fire that manifests as life in the stone too. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You are the music in the melody. You destroy the sins of those who contemplate you. You are the numbers, letters, and words. You remain forever in my heart. You are the five elements. You are the lord of devas. You are very dear like the pupil of the eye. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You remain without blinking and breathing. You remain forever in my heart. You have pArvathi as one half of Your body. You remain through many cycles of creation and destruction of the universe. You ate the deadly poison. You are the primal and oldest one. You are the flame that bears/forgives everything. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You have no birth, aging, or death. You were there before anything. You are worshipped by all the devas. You pervade everywhere. You are everything to me. You are like a golden mountain. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! Karma is causing extreme distress to me. Please save me! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You hold everything including the vast space in you. You contain the length and breadth of everything. When Vishnu and Brahma had a dispute, you stood as an infinite column of fire whose top and bottom could not be seen by them. You kicked the strong, cruel Yama. You dwell in my heart making it your temple (abode). You are the fast lightning and thunder. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! Please save me! I praise you again and again..
O Siva! You neither eat nor sleep. You know the Vedas without learning them. When Ravana attempted to lift the Kailasa mountain without regard, You gently placed your toe and crushed him. You were pleased to hear Ravana play melodious music and praise you. You entered my heart a long time ago. You are the support/refuge for the entire world. O Lord of Kailasa mountain! I praise you again and again.

He self-manifested before all entia came into being;
He decked His well-grown matted hair with the burgeoning White crescent;
with Meru for His bow and great Vaasuki For the long cord,
He pierced with a burning dart The triple towns of the mighty Asuras;
He so dallied With Uma whose white teeth are pearls serene,
That She bore the impress of His ash on Her person And grew forfoughten;
blessed am I Who am given to think on the feet of Siva abiding At Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He is above the Devas of the celestial world;
He reduced to ash the three skyey towns;
He is of Pazhanam girt with melodious gardens;
He is Of the hue of fresh gold;
He wears the milk-white ash;
He concealed the damsel Ganga who moved within His Clustered,
matted hair,
and abode with Uma;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding in Tiru Aalavaai Of Southern Koodal of aeviternal wisdom.
He held on His long matted hair the massed water;
He caused (that) water to (fall and) run on earth;
He caused Himself to be bathed in abundant milk;
He smote cruel Death that rose up in enmity;
He abides in the cloud as packed wind,
and thunders In harsh voice;
He is the One that has in his forehead The fiery eye;
blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He owns the heavens and all else too;
He is cinctured By a streaked serpent;
He is the One who is valiant to dance Surrounded by the mighty ghouls,
in the crematory;
By His sidelong looks He eyed His Consort and me;
He totally cured me of my flaws;
He is the nectarean Honey Who as consciousness abides in me;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He abides in all towns and in the seven worlds;
He wears a white crescent;
He is for ever inseparable From Uma;
He is extremely difficult of access for others;
His dance with ghouls at the crematory is never ending;
He gifted to the celestials nectar;
He is the glorious One Hailed with the great Vedic hymns by Brahma and Vishnu;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He is the aged;
He has a form;
His body never ages;
He pervades the three worlds;
He is the an nuller of sins;
In love He abides with Her whose beauty defies the brush;
Beholding the quaking of the celestials,
He,
the Deva,
Ate the venom of the ocean and blessed them with nectar;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He is the pure Way of the renunciants;
He is the One Who can wipe out sorrow and rule (us);
He but wears The bones of the dead;
He is the One potent to dance In the night;
He destroyed the triple,
walled towns Of those who ceased to think on Him;
He is the Chief Who sustains me--the servitor who is unattached;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He is the animator of lips as well as manam;
He is the inner thought;
He is the fulfiller of thought;
He is the pure One;
His mount is a white Bull;
His matted crest sports a bright crescent;
He is My mother who ever abides in me;
It is He who is tapas;
He is far,
far away from the Chief Devaati Devas;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
As Foe to Darkness,
He the bright One,
annuls sins;
The blamesless One ate poison and gifted away nectar;
As spiralling fire He smote the towns of the mighty Asuras;
As the impartial One,
He graced all;
as the supernal light He is the Beyond far above the celestials;
He is The beacon-light to the chief Devaati Devas;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding in Koodals` Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He is a mountain;
He abides at great Meru;
His well-grown Matted hair is ruddy;
He is the Lord of the celestials;
He is ever firmly poised in my crown;
He is the One Beyond compare;
He is the One who smote the three Walled towns of the hostile ones and reduced them to dust;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodal`s Tiru Aalavaai in the south.
He crushed the ten heads and the shoulders Of the debauchee;
hearkening to the melody Of his hoary strings,
He blessed him;
He loved Arjuna for his servitorship;
in love He blessed him With Paasupatam;
He is the One to be trusted;
He is dear to me;
He is the Pure One,
the Witness of the endless aeons;
Blessed am I who am given to think on the feet Of Siva abiding at Koodals` Tiru Aalavaai in the south.

benefit of panja boothas sthalam in this temple Pachavarneswarar
Saint Tirugnana Sambandar had praised the Lord of the temple in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 5th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.
Lord Shiva of the temple is a swayambumurthy. Lord showed five colours golden yellow, white, red, black and smoke ash to Lord Brahmma, hence praised as Aivanna Perumal in Tamil and Panchavarneswarar in Sanskrit Lord of five colours. The devotee can observe the change of colours in the Linga during each puja. Wherever Shiva Puja is performed in any part of this world, all glory of the pujas reach this place, hence the name Urayur bearing this meaning.
The temple is open from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
Sri Panchavarneswarar Temple, Urayur 620 003, Tiruchi district.
Historical Name: Mukkeeswaram
City : Urayur
District : Tiruchchirappalli
An atheist ignored the Vibhuti-sacred ash Prasad offered to him in the temple. He was born a pig in his following birth and had to live in ugly muddy environment. He realized that his condition was the result of earlier behaviour. He bathed in the Shiva theertha and was freed from the sin. Mother Gandhimathi Ammai was worshipped by Naga virgins in the Nagaloka – serpent world- and was installed here by a Chola king, according to history. Sri Rama worshipped Lord Shiva in Rameswaram. Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva in Mukkeeswaram.
Of the Pancha Bhooda places, Tiruvanaikaval belongs to Water, Kancheepuram to Earth, Tiruvannamalai to Fire, Kalahasthi to Wind-Vayu and Chidambaram to Space-Akasha. The devotee can have the collective benefit of worshipping in these five shrines if he worship Lord Shiva in this temple.
For Sage Udangar, Shivalinga appeared as a Gem, Spatika, Gold and Diamond and as a portrait. Lord also appeared here as Cock and controlled a wild elephant. Urayur also has the reputation of being the birth place of Vaishnavite saint Tirupanazhwar and Saivite saint Pugazh Chola Nayanar. Kochengatchozha Nayanar attained the Lotus Feet of Lord in this place.
Karikal Cholan, a famous king of Chola dynasty during his travel from Kaviripoompattinam passed through this place. A cock struck on the forehead of his elephant. The elephant immediately began to retreat. The king realized the greatness of the place, built a city and stayed here making it his headquarters. The place is also called Urayur Kozhi. Kozhi in Tamil means cock.

besmearing the white sacred ash like sandal-wood paste Civaṉ who kept the floods of the Kankai on the caṭai.
the reason for dancing along with the lady whose fingers are like the petals of the red variety of malabar glory lily.
he pervades everywhere which can be known only by intuitive knowledge who is capable of knowing the true purpose of the actions done by the god in mūkkiccaram which was built by a king.
collecting alms having the white skull as the begging bowl having become united with the water which was received in the loosened catai and being united with umayāl after having discharged an arrow on the forts of the enemies He caused the vēḷ who has spring as his season, to be well-burnt these are the acts done by our god in mūkkīccaram
discharging an arrow on the forts of the enemies and setting fire to the body of Kāmaṉ, have been known to the world are the battles that our god in mūkkiccaram which has no comparison and built by the King who had exercise of sovereign power and who had the banners of tiger and red carp fish which are held high in battles.
to appear beautiful with a lady of tender nature and the gait of a swan the reason for Kaṅkaiyāl to stay in the caṭai which is like lightning is a wonderful act done by the god in mūkkīccaram built by the King whose impartial rule was supreme in the beautiful vañci kōḻi, and who ruled over the pāṇtiyan country also.
having tied an angry cobra having poison in it, in the waist will dance in the dense darkness in company with the pēys, in the midst of fire it is a dreadful act the god in mūkkīccararam which was built by the strong king who is the Lord of Kōḻi, Pāṇtiyaṉ and Cēraṉ whose fame lasted for a time in the North.
Civaṉ will besmears all over his body well-burnt sacred ash;
will dance in the dense darkness It is a deceptive act to take away my beautiful and rare bangles coming to my place what our father and god who dwells in mūkkiccaram built by beautiful and kind coḻaṉ who rules over nēri an destroys the pride of his enemies, does is a faulty act.
Civaṉ has no dress that is worn on the waist Being both male and female, dances in the fire which is full of fame and has many forms you please understand this (people of this world!) destroyed by the hot fire the three forts of the enemies simultaneously is a dreadful act which is committed by the god in mūkkīccaram built by Kāccenkatcōḻaṉ
receiving the water that drags every thing in the red caṭai and kicking the god of death and the idea of holding on the ride side a sharp and good trident of three blades are the strong acts of the extremely angry and strong god who cruched the chest of the arakkaṉ who roared loudly opening his mouth, and who dwells in mūkkīccaram
Māl in company with Piramaṉ who dwells on a flower that grows in the water Civaṉ became truly a mass of fire, to search the famous feet (and head) the uprightness that is done by thegod in mūkkiccaram where the pāṇtiyaṉ who is preeminent by his fame, coḻaṉ and ceraṉ gathered for worship .
buddhist who cover their chests of white flesh, with a cloth and camaṇars who wander naked (Civaṉ) caused the words of those people who talk after eating, defective that is the rudeness committed by the god in mūkkīccaram which was reached by the great and exceedingly beautiful kiḷḷi who is skilled in handling the bright vēl to which flesh is sticking, to worship god (Kiḷḷi-cōḻaṉ)
the chaste tamiḻ verses composed by ñāṉacampantaṉ, of a native Kaḻi where good people reside, which were offered to esteem as the Lord the god in mūkkiccaram which was worshipped by the three kings who wore crowns and who were very strong;
