scattering flowers being steadfast in your worship, there will be happiness always, to you who praise greatly Mutukuṉṟu today itself.

People of this world!
to you who praise Mutukuṉṟu of the master daily with sincere devotion, wealth will come.

People of this world!
those of you who join your hands to worship Mutukuṉṟu of our father being steadfast, for your falsehood to perish!
the world will become yours.

People of this world!
if you scatter fragrant flowers at Mutukuṉṟu of the Lord of the universe, with devotion, your acts, that bind you, will leave you.

those who pay homage to Mutukuṉṟu which has precious stones, will get their distress alleviated as their diseases are cured, and live with peace of mind.

those who are able to say the father in great Mutukuṉṟu will not deceive hopes to supplicants;
the goddess of wealth is near at hand to supply them with wealth.

those who praise without growing weary Mutukuṉṟu of Civaṉ who has a bull, will become rulers of this world surrounded by army.

Devas took the form of ants to worship Sivan

The shrine is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirunavukkarasar.

Sun God in the Navagraha shrine is with His two consorts Usha and Pradyusha both facing each other.  Lord Kailasanatha  graces from a separate temple left of this temple.  The temple has four theerthas – Brahmma Theertham, Madhu Theertham, Kumara Theertham and Padma theertham.  It is said that the hill of this place is but a piece of the Meru mount split by Vayu – God of Wind when a competition arose between him and the divine serpent Adisesha to decide the power of their physical strength.

There is Lord Shanmugha Subramnaya’s shrine with His consorts Valli and Deivanai between the 2 Kasiviswanatha shrines behind the sanctum sanctorum.  There is the Shatkona Chakra below His Peeta. Worshipping Lord Shanmughasubramanya along with this Chakra brings immense benefits to the devotee, it is said.  Selva Vinayaka graces the devotees in the temple.

Shiva Linga in the sanctum sanctorum is in an ant-hill shape with ups and downs without a perfect shape.  It is a sand Linga, hence no abishek is performed.  Only oil application is followed.  As there is a gap in between, it appears as if there are two Lingas. It is said that the right side is of Shiva part and the left as Shakti part, hence praised as ‘Shivasakthi Linga’.  As ants (Erumbu in Tamil) are consuming the nivedhana objects in the sanctum, it is believed that Lord Shiva Himself is acknowledging the nivedhana offers during the Pujas.  This darshan is considered very important by the devotees.  It is also believed that Rathi, wife of Manmatha-Cupid worshipped the Lord praying that her alluring beauty should not make her proud.

Swarnakala Bhairava shrine is in the prakara-corridor with a furious look.  Mother Gajalakshmi is opposite to Bhairava in a separate shrine.  Worshipping both simultaneously relieves the devotee from fears and ensures prosperity in family.  Mother Narunkuzhal Nayaki – Mother with a fragrant hair – graces from a shrine facing south.  Different Alankaras are followed for the mother each day.  Just before Mother Narunkuzhal Nayaki there is an idol of a Mother worshipped in olden days.  Of the two dwarapalakas in the Lord’s shrine, one looks angry, the other smiling.  People generally known for their temperate qualities, become softer after worshipping the Lord, it is believed. The one special feature in the temple is Lord Sankara Narayana combining the greatness of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu and Lord Nataraja with anklets behind the presiding Lord Shiva goshta wall.

Devas, an elite community in the celestial world lost all their wealth and position to demon Tharakasura. They approached Lord Brahmma for remedy.  He advised them to worship Lord Shiva in this place with flowers and assured them that the demon would be killed by Him.  To escape the attention of the demon, Devas took the form of ants (Erumbu in Tamil) to worship Shiva.  As the Linga was too soft and slippery and steep, they could not reach the top of the Linga.  All merciful Lord, changed His form as an ant-hill also leaning slightly to facilitate their pujas to Him.  Lord came to their rescue, destroyed the demon.  He is praised as Erumbeeswarar.

Lord Shiva in the temple is a swyambumurthy.  There is gap in the middle of the Linga as if it is twin Linga. This is explained as Shiva-Shakti form.  As ants go in line in the sanctum sanctorum during pujas, it is said that Lord, in the form of ants,accepted the pujas offered to Him.

திருச்சிற்றம்பலம்

I know not the chaste Tamil works;
I am no poet;
Thought I,
the senseless,
do not know the greatness of Him Who is Thought,
Pann,
Arts and Scriptures,
yet,
He revealed To me His greatness and the way to be trodden;
I reached Him--my Mother and Father--,
in love,
and He continues To hold me as His servitor;
He is the Ruby atop the beauteous Yerumbiyoor Hill;
He is the ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
Was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He is the light inlaid in the crystal`s inner glow;
He is Pasupati;
His guise is Paasupatam;
He smote Jalandara who shouted aloud his challenge;
He is Brahmin;
He is of the empyrean;
He is the One who Measured the cosmos;
He is also the Four-faced;
He is The rare specific unto the troubles;
coming to know Of Him as He is,
I became inly clarified: He is the Ruby Atop Yerumbiyoor Hill;
He is the ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He is the matrix;
He is the Thought of my manam;
He is The immense radiance of Gnosis;
He is the One before whom The celestials fall prostrate hailing Him;
He is the peerless Author of the cosmos;
He is the One that fills the universe With His presence;
He is its middle and end;
He is concorporate With the coy Damsel whose odoriferous tresses excel The flowers in fragrance;
He is the flawless Gem of the crematory;
He is the Ruby atop the Yerumbiyoor Hill;
He is the ruddy Flame;
I,
even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He is the supernal light who rained arrows and smote The three citadels of the puissant Asuras;
He is Sweetly-poised in them that hail Him in love;
He is Nectar;
He is honey;
He is the holy One;
He is the beauteous Auric hill whence issues the whole universe;
He is a pearly Pillar;
He is the Lord of Uma;
He is the Ruby atop the bright Yerumbiyoor Hill hailed by the celestials;
He is ruddy Flame;
I even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He dances in manifold ways to the singing of ghosts;
He is Nirmalan who is supremely valiant in fight,
Wielding a sharp spear;
He grew so straight that neither Ayan Nor Maal who flew up and burrowed into the earth Could eye Him;
He is the Ruby atop the glorious Yerumbiyoor Hill Hailed by the throngs of munis with beautiful blossoms;
He is the ruddy flame,
the Nimalan;
I,
even I,
Was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He pours as dark cloud;
He causes such water To effervesce;
He roams in many towns mounted On His Bull of swift gait;
He owns Otriyoor as His town And rules (the whole universe);
He owns the one great letter (Om);
He is the Ruby atop the glorious Yerumbiyoor Hill Hailed by Brahma,
Vishnu and Indra with mantras;
He is the ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
Was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He is the Ruby atop the lofty Yerumbiyoor Hill who is Hailed by the knowledgeable,
as bright moon,
beauteous fire,
Water,
twofold wind that pursues its course,
space,
Ethereal stars,
earth,
sky and life that is sempiternal;
He is The One abiding in my life,
the touchstone of ruddy gold,
The great,
blue hill and the heap of lovely pearls: He is the ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
Was blessed to reach and attain Him.

I wasted my days in sheer ignorance,
companied With the cruel,
brainless once of filthy mouths Who practised Aaramba Vaadaa,
all unaware of dharma;
I,
the brainless,
would not,
even unconsciously,
think Of the sacred feet: thus,
even thus,
I wasted all my life;
My days of existence were worthless days;
Yet I began to magnify the name Of the Lord and got steeped in the loving servitorship Of Him -- the ruddy flame,
the Ruby atop Yerumbiyoor Hill;
I,
even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

His manam is all wisdom;
He is unbeknown to them That know not;
the knowledgeable ones know Him;
He is the holy One decked with a speckled snake;
His neck Bears the mark of His having eaten the venom of sea,
Full of breakers;
His matted hair is adorned with flowers Of konrai from the petals of which honey flows;
He is The Ruby atop the Hill of Yerumbiyoor whose ponds are Thick with soft lotus flowers;
He is the ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

He is endowed with the great puissance of rare tapas;
But he,
the martial Raakshasa brainlessly uprooted The immense mountain;
He so pressed him that his strong Shoulders were crushed and smashed;
he sank To the nether world;
he then plucked out the nerves of his Forearm,
strummed them and hymned Him;
to this He lent His ears;
He is the Author of the seven worlds;
He is my God;
He is mantled in the tusker`s hide;
He is the Ruby atop Yerumbiyoor Hill;
He is ruddy flame;
I,
even I,
was blessed to reach and attain Him.

The temple is big in size facing east.  Lord Vallabha Ganapathy graces the devotees at the entrance.  The temple has a five tier Rajagopuram and vast outer prakara.  There are shrines for Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga at the entrance of the second tower.  Shrine of Mother Ambica is facing south.  There is also a Nataraja mandap.  At the main entrance are shrines for Lord Somaskanda on one side and Mother Shakti and Sthala Aideekamurthy on other sides.  In the inner prakara are shrines for Somaskanda, Arumuga Peruman (Muruga) and Gajalakshmi.

Mother Parvathi (Shakti) worshipped Lord Shiva here, embraced and kissed Him, hence the place is named Tiruchathi (Shakti) Mutham (kissing) – Tiruchathimuttram.  This form of Mother embracing the Lord still exists in the temple.  This form of Ambika is depicted at the northern side near the sanctum sanctorum.  Mother performing penance standing on a single leg, is also depicted behind this sculpture.
It is said that this a replica of Mother Kamakshi embracing Lord in Kancheepuram.  Mother Parvathi, Sage Agasthya, Saints Gnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar, Arunagiri Nathar and Ramalinga Adigal had worshipped Lord in this temple.  Lord granted the Tiruvadi darshan (darshan of the feet of Lord) to Saint Tirunavukkarasar in this place.  Special pujas are performed in the temple on full moon and new moon days.

Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi wanted to establish the truth that bhakti (piety) alone is the singular path to salvation.  Mother Parvathi was performing penance in the Shathimuttram near the Surya Pushkarini Shoola theertha on the southern side of Cauvery.  But Lord delayed His darshan to Mother Parvathi.  This could not deter mother from Her resolute penance standing on a single leg.  Lord Shiva granted darshan to Mother as a fire ball.  Yet, knowing that the fire ball was but Lord Shiva, Mother Parvathi embraced the fire jyoti.  Lord Shiva was cooled.  This shows that though problem burn a family as fire, this could be solved by mutual love between the couples.

the god holding in his hand a fire that is making a loud noise!
civakkoḻuntu dwelling in tiruccatti muṟṟam!
before the god of death which has the strength to kill and having eminence, hastens to take away my life.
stamp your footprints which are like the lotus flowers.
if you send me without doing so.
reproach which will never die, will envelope you.
Cattimuṟṟam - the temple of catti The request of Appar was fulfilled in Nallūr about which he has composed a tāṇṭakam referring to this act of Civaṉ

see 1st verse you fixed your gaze to reduce to ash the body of aṉaṅkaṉ aṉaṅkaṉ is not used in its derivate meaning, it simply means maṉmataṉ;
only after he was burnt by the frontal eye of Civaṉ he got the name, aṉankaṉ.
you pounced upon Kālaṉ to kill him, in the distant past.
you destroyed the many births of those who bow before your feet after much consideration.
one who dwelt in the minds of your devotees and never left them!
grant your grace to your slave.

see 1st verse.
the five senses entering into the body which can be compared to a hut, and which has nine apartuna, destroy the hold of your feet which is my refuge.
my mind is unsteady like the curd which is churned by the churning staff.
This simile is much used in Tamiḻ literature;
cause the unsteadiness to leave me.
our father.
I, your slave, seek refuge in you, please protect me.
one who stays in the minds of the immortals.

see 1st verse.
the husband of Umaiyāl whose eye-brows are curved like the bow.
one who possesses riches that are permanent.
you came voluntarily and admitted as your protege me who forgot you by falling into the pit of other religion which cannot be considered as anything having any merit in this wide world, thinking the transcient body to be permanent.
I will be ruined if you foresake me.

civakkoḻuntu who dwells in cattimuṟṟam which is eminent by its wealth!
when I was in the embryo in the world of embryo I was thinking of your feet only.
when I went into the street after being born in the world, in my childhood I was perplexed have my perplexity removed by your grace.
husband of Umayāḷ who is eminent by her beautiful body!
I will be ruined if your forsake me.

civakkoḻuntu who dwells in cattimuṟṟam which grants rectitude!
Before the servants of the cruel god of death come in large numbers towards me and make the body fall dead.
you inscribe your feet in my humble mind in this birth itself.
if you are negligent in this world.
who will know in this world that you will grant your grace to your protege after death, in the next world?

see 1st verse.
you burnt with a hot arrow the cities of the enemies in one instant which is the time taken for the time-measure of the snap of the finger.
admit me as your protege removing the connection of attachments.
one who is the embodiment of pure knowledge and who accepted with gladness the worship performed by the daughter of the mountain who has fragrant tresses of hairs on which tumpi a superior variety of bee swarms From this we learn that Umai worshipped Civaṉ in this shrine.

civakkoḻuntu who dwells in the eminent tiruccattīmuṟṟam!
having destroyed the sacrifice performed by takkaṉ who slighted Civaṉ.
when the celestials who do not wink begged to forgive them, on the some day you were victorious, to become renowned.
one who has a blue neck!
you grant your grace to remove completely the several kinds of meanness of your protege who praised you.

see 1st verse Having the suitable eagerness to re-embrance caivism.
leaving camaṇam.
I took refuge in you.
is there anything else except your greatness to be considered as attachment and gain?
one who is very much attached to tillai where great people three thousand brahmins live.
one who remains in the superior mēru mountain which is in the north!

see 1st verse.
fixing firmly a toe of the leg to crush the shoulders, and crowns made of gold, of the arrakaṉ who had a car fitted with machanical equipments and who lifted the mountain Kayilai.
you gave a bright sword fixing a name for it, taking pity on him when he roared you were angry at the diseases and which is the result of the acts of cruel faults committed by me who has a cruel nature.
Note: Nāvukkarāracār`s wish was fulfilled by Civaṉ in Nallūr.
The tāṇṭakam about that shrine tells about it in every verse

the acts good and bad will not remain with those who utter Lord Siva names

The temple is praised by Saints Tirunavukkarasar and Tirugnana Sambandar in their Thevaram hymns.  This is the 119th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns

The east facing temple has no Rajagopuram.  The office of the temple is on the right side.  The flag post-Kodimaram and Bali Peeta are covered with metal.  Nandhi is at a higher level.  There is a three tier inner tower.  At the right side of the entrance are epigraphic details on the sthala purana.  There are also shrines for Lords Maha Vishnu, Muruga with six faces, Bhairava and Mothers Saraswathi and Gajalakshmi and Shivalingas

It is the faith of the devotees that a bath in the Sesha Theertha and worship of Lord Shiva would relieve them from sins and curses.  Those suffering from vision problems use to apply the herbal mixture offered in the temple and bathe in the Theertham.  They also consume the fig Prasad dipped in honey for cure.  Those facing skin problems consume Sesha Theertha Prasad offered on Poornima-full moon days

There are two sacred springs – Brahmma Theertham and Sesha theerthams created by Lord Brahmma and Divine Serpent Adi Sesha.  Brahmma created the spring for his Shiva worship for relief from a curse.  Adisesha passed through a well in the temple to the sanctum to worship the Lord and thus Sesha Theertham came into being.  Those suffering from vision problems bathe in the former with a herbal mixture offered in the temple and consume also the fig-honey Prasad for cure while those with skin defects consume the Sesha Theertham Prasad offered on full moon days.

Lord Vinayaka is worshipped as Pramodha Vinayaka.  The word means excited joy.  It is believed that worshipping Pramodha Vinayaka would keep the devotee ever happy.

There is also Kadukkai Vinayaka in the temple.  Kadukkai is a nut with medicinal value and is used to be powdered and put in muddy water to make it crystal clear.  This is also used as a medicine for cleaning stuffed belly.

A trader stayed in this place with bags of Jadhikai also a medicinal nut that attracted higher tax.  Vinayaka in the guise of a boy came to the trader and asked him about the contents in the bag.  To avoid higher tax, the trader said that the bags contained Kadukkai.  All the contents were found to be Kadukkai.  Realizing that the boy was Vinayaka, the trader begged his pardon.  They became Jadhikkai again.  Since that day, the boy Vinayaka came to be known as Kadukkai Vinayaka.

The temple celebrates special pujas on Tamil New Year day falling almost on April 14, abisheks to Lords Thyagaraja and Nataraja, pradosham days-13th day of new or full moon fortnights, Sankatahara Chaturthi-the 4th day of new moon fortnight, Jupiter worship on Thursdays,  Lord Muruga pujas in Karthikai-November-December, Kalashtami Bhairava Puja, New Moon and Full Moon days.

Dangam means the tool of the sculptor.  Vidangam means ‘without sculptor’s tool’.  That which comes naturally without the use of dangam or sculptor’s tool is called Vidangam or Swayambu.  Seven places with such Vidanga or Swayambu Lingas are called Saptha (seven) Vidanga Sthalas.  Indira won a war against the demons with the assistance of Emperor Mushukunda.  As token of his gratitude, Indira wanted to present a gift to the emperor and asked him what he expected.  Mushukunda asked for Vidanga Linga Indira had.  Indira did not want to part with that valuable asset.  He thought of making 6 such Lingas with the help of the divine sculptor Maya to present them to the emperor.  He made them ready.  Mushukunda, with his own divine power found the real Linga with its fragrance of Sengazhuneer flower.  Realizing the play of Lord, Indira gave all the seven Lingas – 1 + 6 to Mushukunda.
Mushukunda installed these seven Lingas in Seven places. These places are praised as Saptha Vidanga sthalas.  They are 1) Veedhi Vidangar in Tiruvarur; 2) Nagara Vidangar in Tirunallar; 3) Sundara Vidangar in Nagapattinam; 4) Avani Vidangar in Tirukuvalai; 5) Neela Vidangar in Tiruvaimur; 6) Bhuvani Vidangar in Vedaranyam and 7) Aadhi Vidangar in Tirukaravasal.  Lord Shiva graces his Kukkuda dance in this place.

Mother Mahalakshmi, Indira, Sages Kabala, Patanjali and Vyakrapada had worshipped Lord in this temple.  Lord Dakshinamurthy is praised as Gnana Dakshinamurthy.  Devotees believe that Lord Swarnakarshana Bhairava will help them recover the losses they had incurred.   The place was dense with Karahil trees during the puranic period, it is said.  Hence, this was named Tirukarahil and changed later as Tirukaravasal.

Civaṉ who bears water on the long caṭai!
who wears a garland of koṉṟai flowers which are fixed in a row!
who has the fame of being worshipped by Ayaṉ (Piramaṉ) who is seated in a lotus flower!
those who praise Civaṉ as one who is in tirukkāṟāyil which is shining by its fame are faultless people

those who utter the names of Civaṉ such as Civaṉ who wears a crescent, datura flowers along with a cobra which has lines on its body!
who commands everything!
who is the wealth of the brahmins who worship him and who perform the duties prescribed in the vētams.
who is in the city of tirukkāṟāyil surrounded by fields full of water!
are without sins.

those who utter the names of Civaṉ such as one who is the world of bliss!
who is in the earth and who has a fame desired and praised by the celestials!
who is the eye to all the living beings that exist in this world!
who is the object of meditation in tirukkāṟāyil surrounded by fragrant gardens!
are faultless people

Civaṉ who is like the mother!
who has the nature of being the father also.
who is near at hand to good people who cherish him with love!
who is far away from those who have no love towards him.
who dwells with desire in tirukkāṟāyil shining with fame!
acts, good and bad, will not reach the people who praise him uttering the above names.

Civaṉ who is the arts and the knowledge contained in them!
one who is in the mountain Kayilai which is as precious as superior gold and where stags are found in plenty!
one who has a bow with which he caused destruction of the three forts of the enemies!
one who dwells permanently in tirukkāṟāyil shining by its fame the acts, good and bad, will not remain with those who utter the above names.

Civaṉ who bears a river!
who received on the red caṭai which is adorned by a river a cobra that dances spreading its hood!
who is praised by the inhabitants of the seven worlds and the celestials who do not wink!
who smeared himself with sacred ash and who is in tirukkāṟāyil where the gardens are prominent!
the acts good and bad will not remain with those who utter the above names.

Civaṉ who completely removed the sins to vanish!
who is praised by the celestials.
who warded off sufferings to the good and great sages who praise him!
who pervades tirukkāṟāyil surrounded by fields of black soil.
good and bad acts will not press round those who utter the above-mentioned names.

Civaṉ who kicked Kālaṉ (the god of death) being angry with him!
who made (Irāvaṇaṉ) who lifted Kayilāyam to suffer, and destroyed the sufferings of the sages!
who joined tirukkāṟāyil whose brilliance is prominent.
acts, good and bad, will not press round those who utter these names.

Civaṉ who wore a crescent on his head!
who chanted the cāma vetam which is musical along with songs that he liked.
who has the greatness of not being seen by Māl and nāṉmukaṉ (Piramaṉ).
who dwells in tirukkāṟāyil which is shining with its beauty.
all the acts will flee from those who utter the above mentioned names.

there is no substance in the talks of the cruel people who exist in this world, the low camaṇar of bad odour and buddhists who cover their bodies with a blanket, called Civaram.
those who observe the vow of residing in tirukkāṟāyil surrounded by beautiful gardens of fragrant flowers, will have no blemish.

praising the feet of Civaṉ whose meaningful fame has been investigated in Vētams and Ākamams and who is in Tirukkāṟāyil which has a fitting renown and shines with beauty.
those who praise according to their ability with the help of the songs of Nyāṉacampantaṉ, a native of Kāḻi of flowing water who received the grace of Civaṉ, will rule over the heaven.

Lord Siva cured the disease of planets who have a control over humans

The glory of the temple is praised in the hymns of Saint Tirugnana Sambandar.  This is the 38th Shiva temple on the northern bank of Cauvery mentioned in Thevaram hymns.

While entering Lord Shiva shrine, Mothers Mahalakshmi and Saraswati (without Veena in hands) are on both sides of the shrine as Dwarapalakis.  Still noteworthy is that they are sitting in Padmasana style.  There are two Natarajas in the Prakara with Mother Sivakami.  There is a Boodha Gana playing a musical instrument under the feet of the Nataraja near the main Nataraja.  There are two theerthas in Prana Natheswarar temple in the prakara called Surya and Chandra theerthas.  It is said that these two planets considered the two eyes of Lord Shiva are in the Theertha-Spring form to cool their Lord.  Abishek Water for the Lord is drawn from these springs.  Mother Vishnu Durga is in the Shiva goshta.  Shiva Durga is behind the Somaskanda shrine.  Mahishasura the demon is absent in both places.   Mother Cauvery is in the form of an idol next to Durga in the Shiva shrine.  On the 18th day of Aadi Tamil month – July-August special pujas are dedicated to Cauvery.

Lords Vishnu, Brahmma, Mothers Kali,Ambica, Akashavani, Bhooma Devi, Sage Agasthya and Sun God had worshipped in this temple.  Lord Muruga is praised as Shanmuga. The temple was renovated during the 11th century by Kulothunga Chola.  It is under the management of Tiruvavaduthurai Adheenam.

As a rule, those facing any adverse planetary problems and visiting Suryanar Koil, should place their prayers first in this temple before proceeding to Suryanar koil.

Devotees hold curd rice on Vellerukku leaves between 12-12.30 midday time, offer it as nivedhana to Lord and take part in the pujas in the prakara continuously for 11 Sundays for relief from planetary problems and remedy from all diseases. Worship of Mother Mangalambica for five consecutive Mondays ensure safety to the Mangal Sutra blessing, relief from the adverse aspects of the serpent planets Rahu and Ketu and of Sani Bhagwan. The worship also removes delays in marriage affairs in families. Devotees perform abishek to Lord and Mother and offer vastras. They also follow a commitment of honouring five Sumangalis-married women with turmeric, kumkum, flower, betel nut, a comb, hand mirror, bangles, Mangal Sutra thread , a blouse bit and money and seek their blessings. Abishek to Lord is performed with cosmetic powders, oil, rice flour, honey, milk, panchamirtham, curd, fruit juices, green coconut, sandal and sacred ash. Those who can afford, organize feeding-Annadhana.

The temple is praised as Pancha Mangala Kshetra.  1) The name of the place is Tiru Mangala Kudi, 2) name of the Mother is Mangalambica, 3) the sacred spring is Mangala Theertham, 4) The Vimana –Mangala Vimana and 5) Lord Vinayaka is praised as Mangala Vinayaka, all auspicious.
The Navagrahas in the temple prevented a disease to befall on Kalama Muni.  Angry Brahmma cursed planets with that disease.  They came to this place, performed penance on the Swayambu Linga Shiva and got relieved of the curse.  It is thus noteworthy that Lord Shiva of the temple cured the disease of the planets themselves who have a control over the lives of humans.

The Bana of the Linga is taller than the Avudayar in this temple.  Sage Agasthya,  short in stature, offered the flowers to Lord raising his hands over the Linga.
There is no special Navagraha-the nine planet shrine in the temple.  There is a separate temple for the planets in Suriyanar Kovil in the northeast direction of the temple.  It is to be noted that a single temple is constructed as twin temple.

Hence those visiting Suryanar Koil for relief from planetary adversities should visit  Prana Natheswarar temple first and then only proceed for the Navagraha temple as a rule.

It is also said that the Navagrahas offered Curd Rice Nivedhana without salt on a Vellerukku leaf to Lord. Following this belief, curd rice nivedhana without salt is offered during the midday puja in the temple.  Also those failing in the annual ritual for their forefathers offer this nivedhana to Lord.

There is a Maragatha-emerald Linga in Nataraja shrine.  Daily midday abishek is offered to this Linga with milk, rosewater, honey and sandal poured through a conch-Valampuri Sangu.  Consuming this abishek Prasad is believed to be an effective treatment for diseases.  Plantain fruits, betel nut nivedhana is offered.
Mother Mangalambika blesses the devotees from Her own shrine.  The temple is known popularly after Her name.  The Mangal Sutra thread in the hand of Ambica is offered as Prasad to women awaiting marriage promising a good match.  Women take these threads from Ambica, wear them and leave the used-old threads at Her feet.  This ensures all auspicious married life to women till the end.
During Navarathri festival, Ambica procession deity is decorated with different Alankaras in temples.  But such Alankaras are offered to presiding Ambica in the sanctum sanctorum only.  She is dressed with sandal paste only without ornaments and vastras.  The sandal paste is prepared in different colours and is shown as vastra and jewels.  This is indeed a thrilling darshan experience.  This Alankara is followed on the second Sunday of Thai month-January-February.  Devotees too can arrange this Alankara as a prayer commitment.

Alaivanar, a minister of King Kulothunga Chola built this temple without the sanction of the king using the revenues of the state.  Knowing this, king ordered to behead the minister for his act.  The minister had already instructed his men to take him to Tirumangalakudi for cremation.  His wife fell at the feet of Mother Mangalambica and begged that her husband to awake alive and promise the longevity of her mangal sutra.  A voice was heard that her prayer would be responded.  The minister woke up alive and healthy.  He rushed to Lord, embraced Him crying Jeevadhayaka.  Lord Prana Natheswara is worshipped as Jeevadhayaka also.  The minister and his wife prayed to Lord that all women should be blessed with Mangalya longevity.  Lord and Mother granted this boon to the minister couple.

in Maṅkalakkuṭi which is on the northern bank of the poṉṉi (Kaviri) which brings with its floods from the mountain which has in an abundant measure famous precious stones, eagle-wood trees, and sandal-wood trees Civaṉ is the primordial god who was there to be worshipped with flowers uttering his names;
and bathing him, with water filled up in a vessel from the Kaviri, by stretching his long hands as far as the water in the Kaviri, by a great sage.

in maṅkalakkuṭi which has fragrant gardens in which great peacocks dance, when the ladies who have sides like the dancing cobra which has a hood, always sing his praises and to be praised and worshipped with joined hands by brahmins who have no comparison and tēvar who do not wink the feet of the god who was with a divine damsel, is our refuge

the thief who covered himself with the wet skin of a black elephant of large trunk in maṅkalakkuṭi surrounded by gardens full of a fragrance which spreads on all sides the evil actions of those who are able to praise with desire and love the feet of the god who wears koṉṟai flowers along with their buds, with perish.

in maṅkalakkuṭi where brahmins who are eminent by their knowledge of vētam and conduct prescribed in the vētam, and where groups of pūtam indulge in singing and dancing to the accompaniment of the sound of drums `you who are full without deficiency` `you who possess the eight great qualities` praising like this those who bow to him according to rules will perceive the foremost path which leads to eternal bliss.

in maṅkalakkuṭi which is full of fragrance, and belonging to Civaṉ on whose hand a deer is prominent and who has a shining head on which the important five products from the cow are poured for bathing all the actions of those who can praise the eminent feet of Civaṉ who has on his hand a white skull which has no flesh, which is itself Civañāṉam, will meet with destruction

in the clear minds of devotees Civaṉ was always like honey and nectar the Lord in maṅkalakkuṭi who wears a crescent, being himself the spiritual atmosphere.
the defects of those who praise and appreciate his qualities daily, will completely vanish so that they can be saved

Civaṉ who made cupid to die from the fire issued from the frontal eye, who burnt the cities of the cruel arakkar using the mountain, mēru, as a bow and who reigns in maṅkalakkuṭi and is the origin of all things If people praise his feet having sought them as refuge the evil effects of planets and stars will completely disappear from them they are without blemish

when (Irāvaṇaṉ) who went under the big and celebrated mountain of Kailācam, and lifted it, sang the Lord`s praises the virtuous people who praise the feet of the Lord in maṅkalakkuṭi who wears a tiger`s skin, and granted strength, a sword and a long span of life, to him are able to enter into heaven which abounds in very many good things;
you know this.

in maṅkalakkuṭi where Civaṉ who had a form of fire which could not be known by Māl and Ayaṉ who is seated on a cool and big (lotus) flower, the creator of the world in the beginning (people of this world!
) sing the qualities of the god who was beautiful by having on the left half a lady with long tresses of hair on which an unguent is rubbed for adding perfume to it;
that is the proper thing to do;
others are not.

in maṅkalakkuṭi where virtuous people who have completely turned a deaf ear to the lies of jains who have dirt on their bodies, and buddhist who don unfolded saffron robes on their bodies.
Beauty will come to those who are able to praise the red feet of Civaṉ who has on his thick catai Kaṅkai of abundant water, and who has a red body

about my father who stays permanently in maṅkalakkuṭi surrounded by gardens from which gentle southern breeze starts ñāṉacampantaṉ, the eminent person among the natives Kāḻi which has beautiful gardens the verses that were composed by fixing his mind on god, and are capable of helping to reach the feet of the god those who are able to praise god with these early in their lives will become the king of tēvar who do not wink

God helped Thirunavukkarasar and feed him with rice

The shrine is elaborately praised by the Saivite Trinity – Tirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar.  This is the 61st Lord Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

The Vimana above the sanctum sanctorum is called Badra Vimana.  Vinayaka in the temple is praised as Lord Vasantha Vinayaka.  The temple has five prakaras-corridors.  There are seven sacred springs in the temple – Visalakshi, Yama, Kalyana, Agni, Deva, Appar and Maniankarunai.  Vinayaka in the prakara with Lord Shiva and Lord Perumal Senthamarai Kannan and Lord Dakshinamurthy with Nandhi below Him are the differences in this temple comparing the general traditions in other Shiva temples.  Swayambu Nandhi is near the flag post-Kodimaram. Sacred tree of the temple is plaintain.

After Lord Shiva hit Yama the God of Death at Tirukadayur, no deaths occurred in the world thus increasing the burden on earth to unmanageable level.  Mother Earth appealed to Lord Shiva of her pain of bearing unbearable weight.  On a Thai Poosam day- Poosam star day during January-February, Lord Shiva made Yama appear under His feet as a child, instructed him to discharge his duties with impeccable sense of Dharma and reinstated him in the job.  The Yama shrine in the prakara of the temple represents this event.  Lord Shiva and Mother Ambica with Lord Muruga in Somaskanda form are in this shrine with Yama as a child under Their feet.  People celebrate their 60th birth day and perform longevity prayers in this shrine in large numbers.

Saint Tirunavukkarasar was on his way to worship Lord Gneelivana Nathar.  He stood exhausted at a place due to hunger.  A priest appeared before him with rice-Annam or Choru in Tamil.  The priest also assured the saint to lead to the temple but disappeared on the way.  The saint was shocked and prayed to Lord Shiva.  Lord granted darshan to Tirunavukkarasar and told him that He was the priest who helped him.  At the request of Tirunavukkarasar, Lord stayed here in the form of Linga named Chottrudaya Easwarar – God with Rice.  This shrine is at the entrance of the temple separately.  This event is celebrated in the temple on the Avittam star day in Chithirai-April-May.

There is no Navagraha-nine planets-shrine in the temple as Yama is their Lord.  Devotees pray the deepas-lamps before Nandhi as Navagrahas.  Rajagopuram of the temple is called Ravana Gate.  Below the gopuram are nine steps to reach Lord’s shrine. It is said that these steps represent Navagrahas that were at the command of Ravana obeying his orders.

Sage Vasishta used to worship Lord Chidambaram Nataraja during the Arthajama (night) puja every day.  Once he had to stay in this place as he was late.  He appealed to Lord to grant his dance darshan to him.  Obliging His devotee Lord granted the darshan the sage wished.  Remembering this event, Lord Nataraja is in the temple in a painting before the shrine with Sage Vasishta.  Hence, the place is also revered as Mela Chidambaram.

Seven virgins-Saptha Kannikas – Brahmi, Maheswari, Gaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi came to this place before their wedding seeking the darshan of Mother Ambica.  Mother appeared before them and said that they would be  married with good matches and enjoy a happy life.  Mother also granted the boon that they would be in the place in the form of plantain trees enjoying Her darshan.  Accordingly, they stayed here.  Lord Shiva too graced the place in His Linga form.

Lord Murugan sanctum in the center called Somaskanda Structure

Thirujnanasambandar   Thevaram   Ceerkonta paataleer cenkan velleru urtiyeer Neerkontum pookkondu neenkaat tontar ninreththath Taarkonta noolmaarpar takkor vaazhum thlaiccankai Erkonta koile koillaaka irunteere.   This is the 45th sacred place in the Southern banks of Kaveri celebrated by Thevaram.

The ancient Tamils have given the names of the natural plants to the land as well as the city  that depends on it. Hence, the meaning of ‘Thalaichangaadu’ can be understood, if it is separated as ‘thalai+changu+kaadu’.‘Changu’ flowers (shell-like flowers) were grown abundantly in the gardens here and were sent to these temples and also to the surrounding temples.  The inscription informs that the name ‘Thalaichangaadu’ must have come into vogue because of these flower gardens.

The temple is structured in conch-shape.  The darshan of the three prime deities Brahma, Vishnu and Siva is available in the same Siva temple.  The Prime Deity and the Pratosha Lord separately bestow grace on the devotees.  The cosmic billionaires, ‘Sanganidhi’ and ‘Padumanidhi’ receive us at the front portals of the temple itself.  The Chola king Kochenkannan has built many Siva temples.  Of these he has built temples with narrow entrance where the elephant cannot get in.  This is one such ‘maadakkoil’- temple with narrow entry.

The temple has the ‘somaskanda structure’.  That is, when we enter the temple, on the left side is the sanctum of Lord Siva, in the center is the Lord Murugan’s sanctum and on the right is the sanctum of Ambal.  It is significant that Tiruthalaichangaadu in its temple pattern follows the line of the temples in Tiruvenkaadu, Tiruccaaikaadu, Tirumaraikkaadu and Tiruttalaiyaalankaadu.  This sacred place is commemorated in the five aaranyams, namely, Sankaaranyam, Swethaaranyam, Vedaaranyam, Vilvaaranyam and Vatavaaranyam.

Lord Vishnu, in order to protect this world and its inhabitants, had worshipped Sankaaranyeswarar and procured the Conch as His weapon.  Hence, there is a separate sanctum for Lord Vishnu in this temple.

The Lord of this place stands at three feet height as a swayambu moorthy. Pouring gingely oil on the icon of the Prime Deity Sankaaranyeswarar and look at the lamp light, we can see the hair-roots in the lingam.

wearing a white and beautiful men`s ear-ring made of conch and a women`s ear-ring you are above numbers when the Vētams describe you you do not think of any other place (for dancing) except the cremation ground) you stayed in the temple at talaiccankai where indian cuckoos sing in the cool gardens of tender areaca-palms which have put forth clusters of red fruit, as the temple fitting your greatness.

you admitted me as your protege people, showing the skin and the loin-cloth which is torn from a big cloth.
you have a neck which is full of blue colour like the sapphire.
you have greatness which is above the greatness of the celestials.
you desired to stay in the very beautiful temple in talaiccaṅkai where great men who wear on their chest twisted sacred thread, as the temple fitting your greatness.

you sing to the measure of time [[you chant camavetam which can be set to music.]] you ride on a bull having red eyes.
the devotees who carry water to bathe you and flowers to adorn you and who never leave you, praise you standing.
you occupied the beautiful temple in talaiccankai where worthy brahmins who wear the sacred thread and a garland (of lotus) live, as the temple fitting your greatness [[garland of lotus is the distinctive garland of brahmins;]]

you have the nature of thinking of assuming many forms, desiring them.
you placed on the top of your head Kaṅkai too where the white and long crescent goes round and round like a boat;
[[the crescent is compared to the boat;]] you were happy to dwell in the temple at tālaiccaṅkai which has a pavilion surrounded by tower and storeys where flags are to be seen at the shining entrances, as the temple fitting your greatness.

you hold a trident in your hand you bathe in the holy ash of fine powder just like bathing in water.
you have a blue colour in your neck.
you received water on your long caṭai.
you occupied the beautiful temple in talaiccankai where swans stay in the cool littoral gardens where there is plenty of water, as the temple fitting your greatness

Being the earth, the water, the sky, the fire and the air.
those who controlled the nature of the five sense perceptions.
who do not commit any false acts, and never cease from praising god.
in talaiccankai where worthy people who are not low by their deceptive nature, live.
you desired the beautiful temple as the temple fitting your greatness.

holding fire and dancing to make the golden armours of the feet that embrace them to make a sound you were united with Umai who has tenderness like the creeper, on one half.
you joined the well-guarded temple in talaiccaṅkai where brahmins who desired the study of the vētams wear a sacred thread on their chest smeared with holy ash, as the temple fitting your greatness.

you have the honour of pressing down your toe to crush the shoulders which were comparable to the mountain, of the king of ilaṅkai in the south, girt by a great sea with waves.
you wear a girdle in the waist as an ornament [[This refers to Umai who is one half.]] [[Mēkalai: a jewelled girdle of 7 or 8 strands worn by women on their waists.]] you thought of dwelling in the temple with columns in talaiccankai where brahmins are prosperous, as the temple fitting your greatness.

Māl who lies on a superior serpent bed which is like a mat, and Piramaṉ who is seated on a cool lotus.
were not able to find you though the former went digging into the earth and the latter went flying in the sky.
those who do not search for you outside the pale of caivism will not cease from praising you you joined the tall temple which is visible from a great distance and where the wealthy brahmins who maintain the three fires are prosperous, as the temple fitting your greatness.

amaṇar who do not bathe in water which has waves, and cākkiyar, the low people spread slander without being exhausted you admitted me into your grace showing me your divine form.
you stayed for ever in the temple with many floors in talaiccankai where brahmins who vetam in mind all the four important vetams liue, as the temple fitting your greatness.

On Civaṉ who dwells in the tall temple in cool talaiccankai and who wears a cool crescent ñāṉacampantaṉ of good qualities who is a native of Kāḻi of cool water those who are capable of reciting these verses composed (by him) will become tevar to the people of this world which is girt by the sea having waves rolling up and down.
